Rick is one of the good guys.
It’s the “season of love and giving”…but this year, doesn’t it seem more like a “season of fear and taking”? Like many of you, I’ve been saddened by the human impact of draconian government budget cuts and how angry many housed Americans are at unhoused Americans.

DOJ broke the law today by refusing to produce all the Epstein files. It also broke the law by redacting information other than to protect victims. Yet, the corporate media is acting that DOJ did us a huge favor.

Now, more than ever, help build independent, pro-democracy media. hubs.ly/Q03CbHTt0

Wise words from Robert Arnold on sustainability and the case against planned obsolescence! I'm an old resistor who's noticed that there are few companies I can boycott as I prefer to buy second hand or only what's necessary if new. Everyday actions protect our planet.

The Bluesky algorithm pointed me towards a great fit for my interests as well as a welcome diversion from politics that I otherwise wouldn't have known about. I just subscribed to the Many Minds podcast and am looking forward to catching up on past episodes.
To survive and flourish, many animal species rely on ecological knowledge. But this knowledge is not always spread across the group—it's often held by certain "keystone individuals."

Just one of the topics discussed in our latest episode, w/ @pbrakes.bsky.social!

My brother, who died by suicide in 2007 had a severe mental illness and a substance use disorder. He tried to kill me and my parents. We never stopped loving him. Rob Reiner and Joe Biden didn't stop loving their boys either. 💔

This post from Canada reminded me of the rabid response that followed the public smoking ban in the US. The outcry from smokers who could no longer drench my lungs and clothes in their chosen brand of cigarette smoke was fierce, but It provides hope that we will find a solution to our gun problem.
I lived thru the end of public smoking. Early in my career I presented to city councils who were smoking, in front of audiences who were smoking.

Smoking in restaurants, airplanes, hospitals…

All of that seems insane now, but it was very controversial when we DID change it.

We CAN change things.
It’s crazy that people used to be able to just smoke cigarettes wherever they wanted

Nice perspective by @unpopularscience.bsky.social in @currentaffairs.bsky.social.

Debates on AI consciousness persist, yet the scientific consensus on animal consciousness is robust & necessitates a change in assumptions.

I’m going to put this image out here to combat the ugliness of this day…because it captures the pure joy that emanated from his great big smile. RIP Rob Reiner and Michele Singer Reiner💔

Australia has figured out that guns kill people? The US should look into this.

This should have galvanized our priorities. What is wrong with our country? A question directed specifically to the "pro-life" advocates and political party.

We need another concept of animals—they are “gifted with extensions of the senses we have lost or never attained, living by voices we shall never hear” (Henry Beston).

Going to post one of these every day as a reminder.

If this had occurred in the US, Ahmed's heroic act might have been followed up by a visit from ICE.
Wow! This man is a hero.

Watch him wrestle the rifle from one of the Bondi Beach shooters.

I think about this a lot.
🇺🇸 On this day 25 years ago, The Conservative Supreme Court handed George W. Bush the 2000 presidential election.
A heartbroken Al Gore graciously conceded, and delivered a passionate call for national unity.

🇺🇸 Just 20 years later, Donald J. Trump lost by 7 million votes and attacked our country.

What was that the late President Johnson said? "If you can convince the lowest white man he's better than the best colored man, he won't notice you're picking his pocket. Hell, give him somebody to look down on, and he'll empty his pockets for you."
