Horrible to see this. On Monday B Bakewell and myself will move amendments in the Police and Crime Bill on addressing serious Organised Waste Crime following HoL Environment Committee report. Waste Crime is out of control and costs £1bn every year.

Lib Dems call for a VAT cut for hospitality and measures to cut energy bills this morning funded by a new windfall tax on big banks, originally proposed by the IPPR think tank, which Cooper claimed could raise around £30bn in total between now and 2030.

Feels like an important day to get an answer to my written question asking HMG what action they are taking to review the effectiveness of Ofcom in addressing complaints relating to climate change misinformation.

Tell me you don’t want to answer my question in the non answer to my question.

This is the most important amendment to the planning bill! The Gov have agreed to work with Kate Parminter to bring forward her amendment to apply the Mitigation Hierarchy to EDPs. A huge win for the environment & a greener future. Her expert knowledge & diplomacy delivering real nature protection 💚

I submitted the following written question today.

I don’t normally submit written questions as there are very few circumstances where they prove effective. This one might be an exception.

Pleased to see @eddavey.libdems.org.uk on the Today Program this morning calling out Elon Musk’s dangerous comments at the far right rally this weekend and calling on other party leaders to do the same.

After helping @rescuehoadswood.bsky.social I promised to do more on large scale waste crime. So delighted the HoL Environment Committee began a short enquiry on Waste Crime this week which is reported here

Reform are funded by the fossil fuel companies and are working for the fossil fuel companies. More money for them and a climate change disaster for the rest of us. Renewable energy is cheaper, cleaner and provides the UK with long term energy security and green jobs and growth.

A pleasure to support the @cafod.bsky.social Climate Coalition today Act Now, Change Forever Mass Lobby of Parliament along with other Peers from all political parties fighting to help make sure we meet our climate targets #ActNowChangeForever

London could see temperatures of 35 Celsius today. Extreme heat fuelled by climate change is real, here now and a fundamental risk to human life. The latest CCC Adaption Report shows we are not prepared. Not one delivery plan is good & much could not even be assessed. #ClimateEmergency

A ‘sub strategic’ nuclear capability that could be deployed on the battlefield sounds a lot like a nuclear war fighting strategy. This will only fuel mistrust, undermining stability and reduce global security. We increase possible nuclear miscalculations & launch on warning at our peril.

This vape is a case in point. It meets all the criteria as set out by DEFRA but is available for £2.99 online. Items like this will still be sold to children and will still be used once and discarded.

Very sad to hear that Lord Hunt is stepping back. He was always utterly on top of his brief. Always a pleasure to work with. A very effective and highly experienced Minister and a true champion for the energy transition.

I am delighted that the Great British Energy Bill has now passed all of its Parliamentary stages. A better Bill with amendments on Community Energy and modern slavery. Our energy security is national security. Good for UK jobs and green growth. I wish GBE well.

Today in the HoL I asked what assessment the government have made of the increased risk of wildfires caused by climate change ‘We are having a bad wildfire year, with 439 wildfires and 95 square miles burned already.’
May 8, 2025 at 7:05 PM
We don't want:
UK Energy Security.
Long tern reductions in our energy bills.
The UK Green Economy which grew by 10.3% last year to drive UK economic growth & prosperity.
Any new jobs or investment in our area.
And lets stop investment in flood defences because we like being under water...

Personally I would argue the exact opposite. Blair is wrong on this. The huge amounts of funds going to carbon capture without Parliamentary scrutiny are far less likely to bring any benefits to energy bill payers compared to more and faster investments in renewables.

Today I called on the Government to bring forward legislation to protect our ancient trees.
