A9. I made an unplanned stop at Allegheny Portage Railroad, and learned unexpected things. It was an unusual railroad, made in sections, pulling canal boats through the hills by ropes.

A5. Driving around Gettysburg, taking the time to think about the events, the meaning, the dead, is an unforgettable experience.

A4. There are so many great roads. My most memorable remains Trail Ridge Road in Rocky. I was in the passenger seat, and this road was part of my first visit to a national park.

A3. The best drive to a park is the one I'd most likely to take--the drive to Denali. (or any Alaskan park) How exciting to see all the landscapes from here to there! Crossing another country, too. #ParkChat

A1. I prefer to drive, if possible. Seeing the landscape change is part of the travel experience.

I'm going back to Mammoth Cave just for the hiking. The spring wildflowers were crazy beautiful masses of colors.

Yes, I remember that. I walked across the road and down the trail. This was just about a month ago. It had been quite dry in the state, and I had to squint to see the waterfall. It was just drips. It would have been nice to have had the time to hike up to the ridge. A local recommended It. #ParkChat

A9. There are so many sites in Great Smoky Mountains that it would take many visits to learn them all.
I was very impressed with the interpretation of native culture at Joshua Tree NP, both in the VC and with interp signs. I learned a lot about their lives in the area, now and in the past.

A10. I like the back roads, and I don't overplan my trips. That's how I discovered Labrador Hollow in New York state. It wasn't on my maps, but I stumbled across it. There was a boardwalk through a bog and great fall colors. #ParkChat

A8. Wind Cave NP hiking is spectacular. One trail ended at a boundary fence. On that fence was my life Lazuli Bunting. On another trail into a canyon, passing bison in the distance, I noticed 2 raptors flying. They locked talons and rolled in the air...my life prairie falcons.

A6. I visited Badlands NP 24 years ago. I naively thought I'd see a lot of rock, but discovered that the formations are soil. It was fascinating to realize this place changes with every rain. It remains one of my favorite parks. #ParkChat

Due to the circumstances of my visit there, I wasn't able to do any hiking, but I played in the water and on the dunes. Thanks for mentioning the non-sand trails. I didn't realize this. A goal for next time. #ParkChat

I've not been there yet, but now I'm intrigued by your description.

Shhhh. 🤫 I want to keep it to myself.
Actually, you're right. All our national lakeshores are excellent places to visit. I've been several times to Pictured Rocks. It's just one of worthy places in the UP.

A2. One that comes to mind is the Mojave National Desert Preserve. It's a wide-open space to explore, climb dunes, and visit history without the crowds. Dirt/sand roads, too.

A1. While revisiting state parks and natural areas in Door County, WI recently I discovered a gem of a coffee place. Coffee, pastries, breakfast, lunch. Caffe Tlazo in Algoma, WI. I can not believe I deleted the pic of my breakfast.
