A9. I made an unplanned stop at Allegheny Portage Railroad, and learned unexpected things. It was an unusual railroad, made in sections, pulling canal boats through the hills by ropes.

A10. I like the back roads, and I don't overplan my trips. That's how I discovered Labrador Hollow in New York state. It wasn't on my maps, but I stumbled across it. There was a boardwalk through a bog and great fall colors. #ParkChat

A10 Apple trees are being planted at Lindenwald, the home of President Martin Van Buren, near Kinderhook, NY. This will help interpret history of the site. I'm sure many of the apples in Van Buren's time went to make cider (the alcoholic kind.) Here's to apple cider, pies, dumplings, and #ParkChat!

Just for good measure, here's 2 photos of moss on rocks from Wisconsin. As our #ParkChat book club knows, there isn't enough money to make moss grow on rocks if it doesn't want to. 😉

A5. Thank you for including grasslands! Prairies show intense colors in autumn with various asters, goldenrods, sunflowers, and grasses. Where grasslands meet forest you can find colorful vines and shrubs, such as this sumac along the Ice Age National Scenic Trail in Wisconsin. #ParkChat

A3. I can't pick a favorite color, because I like the contrasts. One of the reasons I like to go to the Northwoods in autumn is to see the colors against the greens of the conifers, and the colors against the intense blue skies.

A1. Autumn is the best time to travel. Cooler weather, colorful leaves, and fewer spiders building webs across hiking trails. #ParkChat

A11. I found this gem in the Adirondacks earlier this month. So quiet and undeveloped. I sat there watching a loon diving and feeding. #ParkChat

A6. Lake Superior is famous for its moods, of course. This iconic view is often shown when the water is calm and incredibly blue and green. It wasn't calm this day, and the next day it was thrashing in a storm. #ParkChat

Was it colorful in the Adirondacks last week?
Why, yes. Yes, it was.

A2. A very recent experience was my visit to Saratoga National Historic Park last week. These trees and an original farm house are on the site of a major Revolutionary War battle of 1777.

A6. One visit to Joshua Tree NP was enough to make the park one of my favorites. The US has 4 major deserts, and Joshua Tree lies in two of them--Mohave and Sonoran. This may be unique among our desert parks. I could see the vegetation change just driving along the road. Fascinating. #ParkChat

A2. At this time of year, as trees begin to burst out in fall colors, I like to be higher up, looking down on the canopy.
