A good recent example is how The Mail portrayed protests in Puerto Rico at the arrival of Kamala Harris (she went to a campaign fundraiser held by the Ley 22 tax-evading settlers) as “statehood supporters”, when in reality they were independence supporters. Annexionists don’t burn la pecosa.

My point is simple, we are Puerto Ricans, we are Boricuas, that is our national identity, that is our cultural identity, and within it is our own language, our own history, our own traditions. We are not your fellow “Americans”, we did not choose to be US citizens, such a document was forced upon us

This is the problem w/ discussing Puerto Rico in US media, there’s a severe lack of understanding of Puerto Rican realities, history, politics, & culture. The omission of these elements leads to folks like this to regurgitate colonial talking points & erase our Puerto Rican national identity.

Police in Phoenix said they are leaving it to the FBI and ICE to probe the shooting of a man who allegedly fled immigration agents.

We really are sleeping through a pre-Iraq-war moment. Here, the head of a newish pro-war group Iranan-American group, calls for the prosecution of anti-Trump, anti-war Iranians here and then in a new Iran. Diaspora politics can get stupid and ugly, but i hope this really clarifies the moment.
