A good recent example is how The Mail portrayed protests in Puerto Rico at the arrival of Kamala Harris (she went to a campaign fundraiser held by the Ley 22 tax-evading settlers) as “statehood supporters”, when in reality they were independence supporters. Annexionists don’t burn la pecosa.

This is the problem w/ discussing Puerto Rico in US media, there’s a severe lack of understanding of Puerto Rican realities, history, politics, & culture. The omission of these elements leads to folks like this to regurgitate colonial talking points & erase our Puerto Rican national identity.
LA Times author: “But Bad Bunny is an American citizen, as are most people born in Puerto Rico after 1898, thanks to the Jones-Shafroth Act of 1917. Bad Bunny, born in 1994, made the deadline with 96 years to spare. If the fear is that foreigners are coming here to take our jobs and ruin beloved American traditions, there are plenty of nonnative artists to grouse about.” My response: This section of the paragraph ignores the colonial history of Puerto Rico and how the US citizenship we have was forced upon us, and even goes on to just erase a very common experience of Puerto Ricans and that’s of being treated as the “other” in reality, and half of the time in the legal realm, by the US, not because we don’t fit within their white supremacist “American” framework, but because we never were part of it and the US never intended us to be part of it either. Not only that, the author declares that Bad Bunny (and by extension we Puerto Ricans) is somehow a US “native”, which is not true whatsoever for we Puerto Ricans are native to our archipelago of Puerto Rico/Borikén for centuries. But not just that, calling us Puerto Ricans US “natives”, is an act of the erasure of our identity, one which BAD BUNNY defends and reaffirms in his fucking album DEBÍ TIRAR MÁS FOTOS. LA Times author: “The right remembers that Bad Bunny criticized the Trump administration for its handling of Puerto Rico's hurricane recovery, and that that he has spoken out against ICE's inhumane treatment of immigrants. But calling Bad Bunny a dissenter is too direct, too Stalinist. It's better to cast doubt upon the singer's loyalty to America via thinly veiled racist rhetoric.” My response: The author is seemingly unaware that Bad Bunny supports Puerto Rican independence, and movement that has been persecuted and surveiled by the US since their occupation in 1898. By all accounts, Bad Bunny (and many of us Puerto Ricans) are classified and viewed as dissenters and threats for not upholding the colonial system and for not recognizing the US’s sovereignty over our land. We were killed in the streets for that, we were tortured in jail for that. Bad Bunny and many of us Puerto Ricans aren’t loyal to our colonial occupiers, and to point that out is not “thinly veiled racism”. Conservatives hate us, not just for being a mostly brown and mixed people, a Latine nation, a Caribbean nation, a Spanish speaking people, but because they too can see that we do not sit passively as their colonial machine crushes us, but liberals like this author seem to miss that mark and just assume that pointing out our long history of rebelling against the colonial system is somehow “racist”, and reduces such an act to just “conservatives thinking we don’t fit into the great American nation”, proceeding to cram us into that hole, affirming that we must remain bounded to this colonial relationship.

We really are sleeping through a pre-Iraq-war moment. Here, the head of a newish pro-war group Iranan-American group, calls for the prosecution of anti-Trump, anti-war Iranians here and then in a new Iran. Diaspora politics can get stupid and ugly, but i hope this really clarifies the moment.
NIAC should be prosecuted in America for collaborating with an enemy of the United States and prosecuted in a free Iran for its crimes against the Iranian people.

What actually happened is that they pulled him from a car, beat him so viciously with a steel baton that he had 8 skull fractures, 5 life-threatening brain hemorrhages, and couldn’t remember he had a daughter.

But the violence he endured last month in Minnesota while being detained is seared into his battered brain. He remembers Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents pulling him from a friend’s car on Jan. 8 outside a St. Paul shopping center and throwing him to the ground, handcuffing him, then punching him and striking his head with a steel baton. He remembers being dragged into an SUV and taken to a detention facility, where he said he was beaten again. He also remembers the emergency room and the intense pain from eight skull fractures and five life-threatening brain hemorrhages.
