Heat pumps are a key heating technology in buildings. But Europe's building stock is leaky and some people are worried by the potential impact of massive heat pump use on the electricity grid. What role for hybrid heat pumps? 🧵

It's going to be a lot easier to decarbonize heating if we bring down electricity prices.

That's the focus of Regulatory Assistance Project (RAP)'s two papers out today: how to make electricity cheaper, especially for households.

Making electricity cheaper: Redistributing policy costs for affordable household heat electrification

As heat pump sales appear to have struggled globally in 2024, it's a good time to focus on data.

Pleased to join this in-person workshop on Thursday and talk about the Clean Heat Forum and moderate a session on the importance of data to policy.

What % of a country's electricity can come from wind+solar?

@ember-energy.org hasn't yet published annual data for 2024, but when I add up their monthly data I get:

UK: 41% w+s in 2024
Germany: 43%
Spain: 46%

A few small countries are > but they depend more on neighbors.

Onward and upward! 🔌💡

Now that the political winds have shifted and billions in energy crisis super profits added to their bank statements, It can't be surprising that oil majors backed away from their climate and clean energy commitments in 2024. Not that they were much to begin with.

Big Oil backtracks on renewables push as climate agenda falters
Major European energy companies doubled down on oil and gas in 2024 to focus on near-term profits, slowing down - and at times reversing - climate commitments in a shift that they are likely to stick with in 2025.

With the collapse of the hydrogen hype bubble, we can only hope that it takes some pressure off the absurd and inefficient idea of "hydrogen for home heating".

European countries are still incentivizing fossil fuel boilers. In some, it may not be a subsidy but they still benefit from lower VAT.

Only when all policy signals are properly aligned can we hope for a deep heating transition in Europe. Very nice research by EHPA.

The persistant block in Sub-Saharan Africa is a bummer. Though I imagine the share has gone down with population growth...?

Most of developing Asia & Latin America are getting closer to universal electricity access. But major gaps persist in Sub-Saharan Africa
