…hang on don’t you think that’s a bit too niche a reference?
mmm and the meta commentary is a bit of a hat on a hat, should we try this again?
Alright,

This is definitely one of my favourite eras of Doctor Who. It’s never felt more like a show that can do anything, can take you anywhere. Every single episode delighted me somehow, even if I didn’t love all of it.

I really, really hope this isn’t the end.

It’s kind of a perfect image to end the show, should that be its fate. The tension between the absurd and the mundane is the driving engine of DW, and in its closing moments we’re presented with a perfect synthesis.

Gosh Davies is desperate, isn’t he?

The next Doctor should always feel like a scary choice, whether you cast an unknown actor, an older fella, a woman, whatever. This is certainly that. But Piper is such an incredible actor I’m already excited to see what happens next.

Bold of them to simply not tell anyone about the ending. It’s gotta be the first time anyone’s watched a regeneration not knowing who’s next since childhood, which was tremendously exciting.

Theres so much inside baseball stuff on proud display, like the seal of omega or project indigo. Without the classic series’ freedom to ignore its history the continuity has mounted up, alienating the not-we to an alarming extent.

There’s so much inside baseball stuff on proud display like the power-of-love snipe or the Doctor dual-wielding a gun & a frock. It’s gloriously fannish, adding layers of meaning without detracting from the experience for casual viewers.

Every single member of this cast has proven themselves admirably. Though I think there was more to be done with Belinda, Varuda Sethu crushed it, as did Gibson, Punjabi, Dobson, Redgrave, Langford, Madeley, Hauer-King, de Whalley, Whittaker, even the wee babbies!

Gutted that this is all we’ll get of Ncuti Gatwa. Simply put- he had far more to give. His Doctor was distinct and layered and deeply fun to watch and there’s so much we’ll never see- no Dalek story, no resolution to Rogue. It’s too soon.

Ncuti Gatwa served an acting powerhouse, a victory lap and his best performance yet, demonstrating a beautiful, layered and deeply fun to watch Doctor who will no doubt be a template for many more to come. I’ll miss him deeply.

Everything with Poppy and the Doctor’s quest to save her felt so fresh and new. This is a story that Doctor Who could never dream of attempting before now. Clearly the show has much more to give, and is broadening into exciting conceptual territory. Here’s hoping it continues!

Doctor Who is desperately eating its own tail, clawing at shards & detritus of its history, cannibalising itself. This show is a fractal, closed system- a hall of mirrors. It’s trapped, those final moments especially locking it in stasis.

An absolute mess. I kept checking how long was left cause the pacing was so off-kilter, not least because of the awkward switch to a regeneration story. And so much, like Jodie or Mum Belinda, felt like it came out of nowhere. Christ.

Absolutely wonderful. A perfect culmination of the previous two seasons. A whirlwind ride masterfully executed, I felt everything as richly and keenly as Davies intended. Magnificent. Properly magnificent.

Hahahahaha what the fuck

Like Legend of Ruby Sunday this is impossible to judge on its own merits. Lots of lovely stuff but if next week doesn’t work then it’ll all be for nothing. However if RTD sticks the landing this’ll be one of DW’s best finales. I guess we’ll see?
(Also Archie Panjabi is brilliant)

Not an easy ask, this. Balancing a shitload of finale setup with leading into Eurovision is hard enough even before you try telling an actual story.
But not only does Dawson make it look easy it she also squeezes in Rylan and the most horrific visual ever seen. Fab!

Perfect Doctor Who.
Perfect Doctor Who.
Oooh I liked that one. Some highlights:
- Very happy to see Millie Gibson & Ruby’s family again!
- The Space Museum callback (iykyk)
- Kate’s ruthless steel edge.
- Fresh contemporary villain
- Trinity Wells fascism arc continues apace
- Gatwas last scene
- The focus on post-Doctor PTSD

Ah well. Sequels are never as good as the original I suppose.

Honestly the episode I was most excited for, and it delivered in spades, but not nearly how I thought it would. Slight, but truly bonkers. A defining episode for Gatwa’s era.
