So the next time someone says swords were rare status symbols, you can safely dismiss their claims. Unless they make the claim only for a very specific historical context, in which case it might hold water.

This is further corroborated by Ahmad ibn Fadlan who in his travels writes that (near) everyone in rus lands carried a knife, an axe and a sword. Swords in the scandinavian and rus cultures of this time were very common everyday items to own, far above that of war gear such as helmets.

The discrepancy here is major even when accounting for archaeological bias in favour of swords, with a ratio of over 500:1 of swords to helmets. We're looking at mass-produced objects owned by people from all over the social strata, not some exclusive items owned only by a rich warrior elite.

A very telling example of this is Viking age Scandinavia. There's an estimated 2500+ archaeological finds of swords in this context (might be over 3000). This is an insanely high number. As a contrast we have 5 finds of helmets, 4 of which only retain small fragments of the oculars.

There's way too many cases of this to count, but I'll bring up one idea that makes the rounds in a lot of 'history enthusiast' spaces - the notion that swords were expensive status symbols. In reality it of course matters when and where you look, but largely this idea does not hold true.
