This is chronicled really well in "The Gunning of America", and has a material basis: Guns are durable good that last decades if properly maintained, sometimes even longer, and gun companies has basically already sold everyone who wanted a gun one by the 70s and had a saturated market.
IMO many Americans don't even buy guns for personal protection or to defend themselves against a tyrannical government. They simply have a shopping addiction

My high school classmate. AHS 84!
I went to the House Floor with a simple amendment: no cuts to Medicaid or SNAP.

Republicans shut it down.

They’re fine with gutting health care and food assistance, just as long as Trump and his friends get their tax cuts.

Hi, this is Meg Barnette, Brad's wife.

While escorting a defendant out of immigration court at 26 Federal Plaza, Brad was taken by masked agents and detained by ICE.

This is still developing, and our team is monitoring the situation closely.

Poppy made two bouquets out of tp rolls and flowery hair clips. Then we had a ceremony and both she and her mama got married to me. I'm a lucky guy. How is your day?

I'm here for Pope jokes and Dalai Lama jokes.
so the Pope is with the Dalai Lama on a nondenominational world peace tour & they stop in Chicago. The pope takes the Lama to his favorite hot dog stand, says, you gotta try it, this guy's the best. the guy says "What can I getcha, Your Holiness?" & the Dalai Lama says "Make me one with everything."

I see that the EU is putting together a half-billion dollar fund to lure US scientists to Europe.

Dammit, even the Europeans don't care about rescuing those of us in the humanities.

Somehow, Trump has declared that we’re under numerous national emergencies from the Southern Border Emergency to the Energy Emergency, Trade Emergency, Public Lands Emergency, and Immigration Enforcement Emergency. Yet these crises seem so “urgent” that he finds time to golf every weekend. Odd.

THIS is what we should be doing while the machines and AI do the grunt work - read poems and map the range of animals through time.

These folks are doing my kind of work.

Ancient poems document the decline of the Yangtze finless porpoise
The porpoise is critically endangered. Ancient Chinese poems reveal the animal’s range has dropped about 65 percent over the past 1,400 years.

resolved: people who insist that all social media sites must be places where users are constantly encountering and arguing with people over fundamental disagreement do so because their actual, real lives are echo chambers where they do not encounter any meaningful difference from day-to-day.
