Interesting read. Pretty cool to have this problem.

New from me: I spoke to two scientists who originally helped spread the use of carbon capture. They now say it's being misused. Here's why (gift link):
The Scientists Who Popularized Carbon Capture Have a Warning About It
Many countries are relying on it to meet their climate goals, but it might hurt more than help, they say.

I've finally got around to curating a selection of films about the #climate crisis 🎥

There's lot of mediocre climate films out there, but for me these stand out head & shoulders above the rest 🎞️

They make excellent resources for classrooms, lecture halls, or community cinema's 🎬

Excellent piece to start your day. I loved the parallels @daanwalt3r.bsky.social draws between battery rollout and previous agricultural revolutions. Daan has quickly become one of my favourite authors.

No longer. Batteries will change the solar harvest, in the same way silos and refrigeration changed the food harvest... but over years, not decades 🔋🍏

So … vaccines prevent autism?
Breaking news: A new study says children whose mothers had covid-19 in pregnancy faced higher risk of autism and developmental issues.

Study authors said the findings don't prove that covid-19 causes these conditions, but signal an association with them.

The wind doesn’t always blow, but it’s a real corker when it does. Leaving plenty extra ⚡️ to charge batteries for when it doesn’t.

Why? About 85% of UK⚡️ is from renewables ☀️💨 Storage is lagging behind so it’ll go to waste if not used. Benefits of #NetZero drive!

Fascinating.

🧵 We’re all familiar with the debate over whether green growth or degrowth is the better strategy for rapid emissions reduction. What we talk less about is that the current global economic system of growth actually *requires* the energy transition in order to sustain itself.

Why?

Economic growth beyond 2050 requires us to transition. It will be for this reason that we do and not because the greenhouse effects of CO2 and CH4 will kill us all.

ULEZ means about 1,500 sq kilometres - the whole of Greater London - is covered by road emissions control.

Stop and think about that for a second. It's incredible. Its impact on public health has been huge.

Studies said it would take 200 YEARS to reach this emission level. Khan did it in five.

This was a great episode.
So wonderful to join my friend @ayanaeliza.bsky.social on her podcast.

For the first time, new clean energy generation (solar, wind, nuclear) was added faster then new electricity demand (369Twh). That will now happen every year — globally.

It is interesting to see how horse fodder and food was as much a part of our energy mix (20%) in 1820 as coal is today. In 1920 coal was up at 70%. Note these are percentages not quantities.

No, this is not a good argument for nuclear power. In a system with lots of variable supply and demand peaks, the last thing you need is "baseload" supply you can't switch off. What you need is flexibility. As for reliability, no: unplanned loss of a GW nuke is worse than predictable variability.
