A friend who teaches theology shared with me a post about CS Lewis's Mere Christianity, which discusses foundational Christian logic across denominations. It reminded me of Dale's tweet below, and I wanted to share some thoughts here regarding modesty and respectability, which are often hot topics.

I’ve been using this word but apparently it didn’t exist so I’m now trying to make it a thing.

Discommunity - The experience of living in coexistence while lacking the relational bonds that provide for a sense of belonging.
Near synonyms: Alienation, disconnected

Christianity is, perhaps for most of its history, more of a cultural aesthetic than a coherent metaphysical/ethical system.

It does not disagree with atheism it manufactures disgust of atheism. This trend isn’t new. Just more explicit as Christians feel more emboldened to enact cultural violence.
I wrote about the "Jesus glow" trend on TikTok, and how it perfectly encapsulates the narcissism and moral emptiness of conservative Christianity online.

Literally, the argument for faith is "it'll make you hotter."

When are we going to remember the raw masculinity of our ancestors? A time when Men were Men! With our bells and handkerchiefs!

This looks great and if anyone is aware of anything similar happening in London please do let me know!

Go watch Conclave. Genuinely fantastic movie that imagines the Catholic Church not as good or evil but just deeply human with all that beauty and brokenness. The cardinals are power hungry politicians but also sympathetic. The mystery and tension is top tier too.

Big spoiler in the next post.

NO, says the subjectivist Bayesian, it belongs in minds. NO says the die-hard frequentist, it belongs in hypothetical infinite sequences. NO, says the propensity theorist, it belongs in magic metaphysical bullshit. I rejected those answers <curtain opens to reveal Logical Foundations of Probability>

Instead, we should look to history, path dependency, institutional structures, politics, and economics. For Tokyo, I think urban planning—walkability, mixed use neighborhoods, affordable real estate—all contribute to the richer media and commercial systems that feed into culture.
