Added plenty spaces for wildlife. Shallow parts where birds can bathe, stones where insects can drink.

Decided to build a water feature instead. All stone hand collected in the neighborhood. 🌱

No beauty, but it will do the job.

The keystone that holds everything together.

More impressions from the build.

Forgot to post the end result, but here we go. 40+ craftsmen, five days.

After the ordeal, a well deserved snack.

Can’t escape the walls, though.

I haven’t taken a walk for weeks now because I used all my free time to build walls. Took a break from walling today and. discovered that the wild roses are in full bloom 😍

🌱 I've tried cultivating poppies for years without much luck. This year, they appeared in one of the ancient walls (where I didn’t plant them) and seem to like it there. 🌱 (My garden does what it wants, anyway, it is cultivating me, not the other way around.)

Definitely a niche project…

The construction of the #tomatoterrace is nearly completed. This has been a very ecological project. All stones are local and were transported to the building site by hand, no fuel (except beer) or electricity was used in the construction of this wall. 🌱🌱🌱

The painted stone in the niche is from a house that was torn down. Stones can be recycled often- even if they are weathered or broken, they find good use in the interior of a wall, where they add to its strength.

This stone, which forms the base of a niche for placing a tub length-wise, is the only stone “imported” from a field 10 km away.

Plenty of space for pots and the mortar mixing tubs I grow tomatoes in.

🌱 Level two of the #tomatoterrace completed. Built almost completely from stones collected from <= 500m of my property. You can see where I ran out of good stones (and patience), might redo that part after I’ve wheelbarrowed in another ton or two for level 3.

I keep holding back the stones because they’re so versatile. The piles left and right work as corners or wall tops, some even as stairs. Those in the middle are tie-stones/through-stones, which extend through the entire thickness of the wall for added stability.

Wall built by a group of very motivated first-timers in just two days - in difficult terrain and with intermittent rain showers. 40 more cm below ground…

Lilac in full bloom, attic swarming with wild bees. 🌱

Lucky I had my camera with me. Male European green lizard sunbathing in one of my drystone walls.

Another fan of dry stone walls.
