Just in time for the summer holidays. I am looking forward to reading this book.
Today I held the finished copy of my book for the first time. Three years (or a lifetime?) in the making, and in just a month, it’ll be in readers’ hands.

'Drystone – A Life Rebuilt' is out 7 August.

No beauty, but it will do the job.

Forgot to post the end result, but here we go. 40+ craftsmen, five days.

Dramatic morning. Blackbirds all agitated, but no cat nearby. When I opened the door, the male bird made distress sounds and started flying up and down. This is unusual, because so far, he‘s always come very close, occasionally even ”parking“ a chick nearby.

Told them they got zero engagements here. Their reply: we don't care. Life's good. Stop wasting your time on social media.

I haven’t taken a walk for weeks now because I used all my free time to build walls. Took a break from walling today and. discovered that the wild roses are in full bloom 😍

🌱 I've tried cultivating poppies for years without much luck. This year, they appeared in one of the ancient walls (where I didn’t plant them) and seem to like it there. 🌱 (My garden does what it wants, anyway, it is cultivating me, not the other way around.)

The construction of the #tomatoterrace is nearly completed. This has been a very ecological project. All stones are local and were transported to the building site by hand, no fuel (except beer) or electricity was used in the construction of this wall. 🌱🌱🌱

The painted stone in the niche is from a house that was torn down. Stones can be recycled often- even if they are weathered or broken, they find good use in the interior of a wall, where they add to its strength.

🌱 Level two of the #tomatoterrace completed. Built almost completely from stones collected from <= 500m of my property. You can see where I ran out of good stones (and patience), might redo that part after I’ve wheelbarrowed in another ton or two for level 3.

I keep holding back the stones because they’re so versatile. The piles left and right work as corners or wall tops, some even as stairs. Those in the middle are tie-stones/through-stones, which extend through the entire thickness of the wall for added stability.

Wall built by a group of very motivated first-timers in just two days - in difficult terrain and with intermittent rain showers. 40 more cm below ground…

Beautiful.
Alongside writing and photography, I'm one of a small group of female drystone wallers in the UK (and world). For those who don't know, drystone is a traditional craft where stone structures are built entirely without mortar.

Here's a 'niche' that we built recently from York stone.
