I spent the summer on the outskirts of a town with 30,000 people and good (but not excellent) bike infrastructure, and getting around by bike was absolutely the best transportation experience of my life.

I am currently eating a German bakery item that seems to be a banana wrapped in marshmallow cream (?) laid out on a cookie and dipped in chocolate. I have to give this one an A+. Why has no one else thought of this?

Fantastic example of the effects of language contact on today's Tagesschau (German news). The newscaster reads so many American words with American r's (President Trump, Arizona) that immediately afterwards they pronounce a German word with an American r (gereist).

Finally watching The Last Kingdom and have encountered one of my historical/fantasy writing pet peeves, which is having just one or two 'old-timey' ways to say something like 'money' and then using them over and over again almost like proper nouns.

I moved to Germany with very little in the way of physical belongings, and reconstructing furniture and housewares has been...actually not that much of a challenge! What did I do? Where does someone like me get more stuff????

Tonight somebody told me that whenever they look at the Big Dipper, they see a shopping cart, and now that's it, that's the end, the whole constellation is ruined for me, it's just The Shopping Cart now and I can't see it and think of anything but the vastness of endless parking lots.
