We wrote a paper that used double helix metaphor, "Our findings illustrate that both educator response & education policy create a double helix of oppression...that make it incredibly difficult for Black girls to be protected from racialized sexual harassment"-this was our note on Watson's citation
Footnote 4: It is not lost on us that Watson & Crick made use of Rosalind Franklin’s work without her knowledge or permission. Though beyond the scope of this paper, we want to acknowledge the way patriarchy constructs these men as the discoverers of world-changing knowledge that could not have been achieved without stealing this woman’s ideas. Particularly because Watson wrote of Franklin “The thought could not be avoided that the best home for a feminist was in another person’s lab,” she was subjected to much gender harassment that diminished her incredible contributions to this work. Repeating: The psychological harm we are inflicting on these children is immense. Even witnessing a parent's arrest can harm children's mental health, but being arrested as a child/teen decreases chances of graduating high school & increases chances of anxiety, depression & unemployment as an adult.
Watson said she saw agents dragging residents, including kids, out of the building without any clothes on and into U-Haul vans. Kids were separated from their mothers, she said. “It was heartbreaking to watch,” said Watson. “Even if you’re not a mother, seeing kids coming out buck naked and taken from their mothers, it was horrible.”

Exactly. And let’s be clear that when the right came for mostly Black & Brown women & queer professors, the left & universities didn’t protect us. The right used us as targets before they went to CRT, DEI, universities generally & now broader culture. They let us be harmed & now it’s harming them

As the attacks on mostly Black & Brown women & queer junior professors was effective, the right attacked curriculum & programs like CRT and DEI. And because the universities & admin had produced no defense of us, they followed that same pattern of silence. Now they are the ones being fired. 4/

One admin told me he didn't want to put out a statement in defense of me because he "didn't want to fan the flames of harassment". And I replied, the problem is "I'm already on fire and you're letting me burn on my own." The universities & admin were content to let us burn. 2/

BAY AREA UPDATE: CVS will let me schedule a visit for myself starting September 4th. But when I try to add my child, who is also high risk, this message comes up.

I agree, most students are not trying to cheat. Many students don't understand the benefits or the constraints of AI. I also do not want to police them for use. So here is my syllabus policy & we discuss in the first few weeks of class.

Please feel free to use, adapt & share, just cite!

There is evidence that use of AI facilitates labor exploitation of Global South laborers and risks severe environmental repercussions. Many AI platforms rely on stolen intellectual labor of artists and some platforms are used to engage in sexual harassment and exploitation. Further, in many cases, these AI bots provide incorrect and unreliable information and citations. All of this exploitation for, what Dr. Tressie McMillan Cottom calls, “a mid technology”. Often, the social and intellectual harms outweigh the positives. It is for these reasons, the use of AI is prohibited in this class. Concurrently, I am not interested in participating in a surveillance structure that claims to “detect” AI-produced material, creating a hostile dynamic between you and your instructor. College is a time for you to decide who you want to be, how you want to engage the work, and take some degree of control.
