If so, this is the first known photograph of a living member of this species! The last known documentation was a preserved specimen from roughly 150 years ago.

Cornell also has an app called “Merlin” that lets you identify birds by listening to their songs and comparing the audio to a database of birdcalls. That’s how I got to find out that I was hearing bluejays and woodpeckers all the time despite being terrible at spotting them in the trees.

For anybody who wants help with this, I really recommend downloading the iNaturalist app onto your phone. You can identify local plant, fungus, & animal species by taking pictures of them.

The same org also has a second app with a more simplified UI called “SEEK,” which I use to ID wildflowers.
