There's one in the backyard. We've been here 8 years and this is the first year it's blossomed. I've been enjoying it so much. Lorikeets love them too

Tell me about it. Mine got moved to the living room to make room for art supplies in my office. Everything in the two cases under the AC is from work

Fond farewell to the blossoms on my Illawarra flame tree as our first #BrisbaneStorm of the storm season comes in from the "bad direction".

Work in progress and inspiration.

The flowering of the red kurrajong (floral emblem of Darwin) is a sign that freshwater crocodiles are ready to lay eggs.

This is the second "think stop strategising" I've come across in as many weeks.

Higher Education investment flows towards data rich environments so to chase that investment data is pursued. We become data. How do we find the ideas that will change the world if we don't stop writing Q1s?

Thoughts?

We need to let the mud dry slowly so the oven doesn't crack. So today I pulled out as much from the inside as I could. This will allow the air inside. This weekend I'll light some small fires.

The chimney needs to be burnt out to draw the smoke. Cardboard is covering the vent at the back.

Today is the insulation layer and chimney with one ratio of sand replaced with perlite. This will make it lighter. We've also begun removing the cardboard mould. We would burn it out if there wasn't an exercise ball in the middle 😆

Books which changed the way I think

Finished the thermal layer with a different type of clay and sand. It was easy easier to handle but it's cracking because we could only get sandpit sand. You need to use bricklaying sand. It locks together better.

Next week insulation which is lighter so able to sculpt with it

I can't help but be a cynical Gen X Queenslander with a Tory authoritarian government, when the best spot to see the Brisbane protests is "under construction"

This is direct from the ALP in the 1960s playbook but it was Jim Cairns being an economic xenophobe about Egypt and Turkey and the data was GDP spending on education. But the rhetoric is the same

Didn't quite get the first layer done. Close. This was 4:1 sand:fireclay with enough straw to hold it together. Sand is the most important ingredient. Clay holds it together. Straw strengthens it.

So I'm making my second mud oven. Thought I'd do a thread in case people are interested in the process.

At the moment we're collecting rubble to fill the base with. When we reach the final course of bricks, we'll flatten it out with gravel/sand whatever.

Then it's glass bottles to the top 🍾
