The Eric Schickler essay in Larry Bartel's symposium on "What Trump Has Taught Us About Political Science" is one of the most insightful pieces I've read in 2025.

US institutions turned out to be weak, and we have to rethink conventional wisdom.

Without asylum:

Marks and Spencer wouldn't exist

Queen would have been without a front man

The other queen wouldn't have had a husband

Judith Kerr would never have written The Tiger Who Came to Tea

And thousands of less famous people wouldn't have been teachers, politicians, neighbours, etc

This. The president can't extort corporations to pay essentially taxes to him personally so that he can use that money at his personal discretion to do government work.
It flies under the radar because it is overwhelmed by the sheer repulsiveness of the physical destruction of the east wing, but there is no way that a president should be allowed to use private money to change public property. It circumvents the power of the purse.

An ICE agent, who is being arrested for drunk driving and nearly killing his little kids & others, tries to stop the arrest by racially profiling the officers arresting him. Amazing to watch the courtesy given to him as he is belligerent and uncooperative

It turns out that once you correct for this error, unemployment is actually rising faster for NON-degree workers - meaning that explanations in terms of AI replacing the college-educated workforce don't make much sense, and this looks a lot more like an across-the-board labor market slowdown.

From the piece: "Labour market entrants without a degree have seen a 2.4 point rise [in unemployment]. This is very different to the much more modest 0.7 point rise among... non-grads in their mid-twenties who are sheltered from today’s harsh hiring conditions." (For degreed workers, it's 1.3%).

Did you know that Turkey did some ‘MMT with Islamist characteristics’ this century? They got some cool public infrastructure out of the deal (including a new airport) but the cost is obvious. Trade-offs exist.

The extent to which ICE is ignoring all civil rights and due process is astounding — and indicative of a culture where they’ve been told they can do literally no wrong. Agency and admin leaders must face sanctions and legal consequences.
“ILLEGALS” MY ASS!

Green card holder Rami Othmane speaks out after being snatched off the street by ICE while driving to the grocery store.

He’s a documented immigrant and the husband of Dr Wafaa Alrashid, chief of staff at a local hospital. He was locked in detention for 13 days.
