Did you know that Turkey did some ‘MMT with Islamist characteristics’ this century? They got some cool public infrastructure out of the deal (including a new airport) but the cost is obvious. Trade-offs exist.

The egalitarian moral package evolved during humanity’s ‘tribal’ experience furnishes the very kernel of what makes Hayek’s great society possible. - my review of Gaus’s the open society and its complexities

The prices start going up around the same time. So less electricity is supplied at the price demanded. It is quite a straightforward mechanism to say labour productivity slows when a key factor input becomes more scarce. Not sure what your issue is. Maybe just bad vibes?

Can neoliberalism and social justice go hand in hand? That was my case at a public lecture at the LSE last night as part of the Hayek Program.

Many thanks to Bryan Cheang for expert organisation and hosting, and Poala Romero for such a reasoned response and helping carry the Q&A.

Hitler promoted Volkswagen, Trump promotes Tesla. In Hayek versus Trump, we update Hayek’s account of the road to serfdom for the 21st century. Tariffs and immigration controls are the radical right’s strategies for government control over the US economy www.journals.uchicago.edu/doi/full/10....

Last week I talked about drink driving, deterrence and deviance with sixth formers at the McAuley Catholic High School in Doncaster. This is what criminology is all about.

Very grateful to Caitlin Wallace, a Lincoln sociology alum of 2022, and her team for making this day possible!

Great module options fair today. We discussed our various specialist subject modules that our UG students can choose from across politics, sociology, criminology and international relations for next year.

Looking forward to teaching many of our students Human Rights next year!

Lively discussion about the sheer normality of crime at Uskudar from students on politics, international relations and forensic psychology.

Great campus and very kind faculty.

The bones of this presentation was published by Works in Progress earlier this year: worksinprogress.co/issue/how-th...

Really looking forward to speaking to Uskudar students tomorrow in Istanbul about how the U.K. (and Turkey) reduced drunk driving and what this tells us more broadly about criminal motivation and deterrence.

Great to see the political theorists catching up with the political economists! It was a pleasure introducing robust political economy and neoliberal social justice to students on the LSE's PPE research seminar program today.

Many are surprised when I show them the data. Young people are told all the time they are irresponsible. But in many ways, young people today are much more socially responsible than people my generation and the generation before me.

I’ve been talking at schools in Lincolnshire about drink driving. I emphasise the good news. Young people today are much less likely to do it than young people in the 80s and 90s. My message is that drink driving isn’t just dangerous, it’s now quite rare and deviant among many peer groups.

Why do people drink and drive, how do we stop it, and what does this tell us about crime more generally? Had a lovely time introducing some future students visiting the University of Lincoln to criminology.
