"To robbery, slaughter, plunder, they give the lying name of government*; they make a wasteland and call it peace."

*we usually translate 'imperium' as 'empire' for various reasons but it is worth remembering that in ancient Rome it meant a type of official, legally defined, government authority.

#TinyJoys but if the most rightwing political party leaves the government for very strict immigration measures their own Secretary didn't manage to execute, there is some hope in dark days!

Similes like this are so helpful; it seems really obvious when you say it out loud but there is a genuine perspective shift when you're emphatic that the point of your teaching is not to create 15 essays, but 15 students who can write an essay.
Even accepting the premise that AI produces useful writing (which no one should), using AI in education is like using a forklift at the gym. The weights do not actually need to be moved from place to place. That is not the work. The work is what happens within you.

😞 It's here...it's real... Dutch cuts to HE will increase, with redundancies and closures equal to the horrors elsewhere.
If you're seeking refuge, the Netherlands is no longer the place to look. If it ever even was.

Things I learned while marking archaeology exams.

i. The Netherlands and Germany are in Central Europe.

ii. Punctuation matters, or Asia is in northern Europe. Not sure which one...

iii. Farmers are also known as 'practitioners of agriculture.'

If this were a postdoc, I'd jump at the opportunity immediately - it's such an interesting project!

Here is my best guidance for action, rendered beautifully by the great John Lithgow. I first published these lessons more than eight years ago, in late 2016. They open the twenty chapters of "On Tyranny: Twenty Lessons from the Twentieth Century."

An immense thread, but I've rarely seen anything that reflects the current *mood* in many aspects of Roman studies better. This book is definitely on my list!
There were loads of incredibly cool and interesting cultures and empires in the past that don't dominate the popular imagination/history shelves the way ancient Rome does - and usually a particular version of ancient Rome.

My book is about *why* ancient Rome dominates and why *that* one version.

The shoes have come off! 👟

A trick from my PhD days - when I struggled to focus during writing time, I took my shoes off. Hey pronto, instant comfort and concentration. Sometimes sitting on the floor helped too. Still no clue why, but if it works...

Anyone else with strange writing habits?

I don't know who this guy is, and I'm anything but a fashionista, but these threads (or whatever they're called here) are gold 🥇👌
Not true. I'll give you some examples of when styles crossed over from womenswear to menswear, and how men have worn straight-up womenswear or just feminine styles in cool ways. 🧵

How correlation and causation are still somewhat confused these days...and apparently border studies have to become even more visible. Great work of projects like Constructing the Limes still being ignored 😞

White men, some women, a Lara Croft lookalike?!, some whips, all digging...that's what Google and AI give me when I ask for images of archaeologists.

Help me show my Intro class what archaeologists *really* look like, and give me your best arch pic for use in class. Please?
