Reproduce 10 of Du Bois' Data Portraits over 10 weeks, using modern charting packages.

Reproduction of classic designs is an effective way of exploring the minutiae of design. Here's one I produced with @observablehq.com Plot
Reproduction of W.E.B Du Bois' "Proportion of freemen and slaves among American negroes" visualization for the 1900 Paris Exhibition. Below the title in English is the French translation "Proportion de negres libbers et des escalates en Amerique". Below that are the years 1790, 1800 in ten year intervals up to 1870 from left to right across the top of the chart. The chart is an area chart within large square dominantly black labeled "Slaves" and "Esclaves" in light brown contrasting text. The upper area of the chart shows the %s 8%, 11%, 13.5%, 14%, 13%, 12%,11% and 100% largely following the upper edge of the black area. The remaining space above this area is shaded green with some vertical striping reflecting the hand-painted infilling of the original. The green area is labeled "Free - Libre" comprising only a small upper green band, reflecting the broadly 10% of the non-enslaved black population of America during that century. The green zone falls rapidly to the bottom of the chart between 1860 and 1870 following the emancipation of 1865.
