Hey academics, do you have recommendations for books that assist with dissertation advising? I found ones for doctoral students but I want to improve my skills in guiding them through it. Thank you! #academicsky #phdchat

I missed this the first time around. Really important read.
Doctoral programs are pausing or cutting back admissions. This is just the latest signal that the future of the university is under threat, @ibogost.bsky.social writes:

The Department of Ed has a form to snitch on DEI policies in schools.

I’d be a shame if we broke it with thousands of responses… enddei.ed.gov

We all saw this coming.
New from me: Regular civil rights enforcement at the Education Department has been curtailed in recent weeks because some staff face a ban on external communications, sharply limiting their day-to-day work. www.wsj.com/politics/pol...

I cite YRBSS data in my research and in presentations. I am angry.
The CDC has removed data on sexual orientation, gender identity, and health disparities from their website.

Pages removed include:
- Youth Risk Behavioral Surveillance System
- Social Vulnerability Index
- Efforts to Address Racism as a Fundamental Driver of Health Disparities

I was raised in a miliary family. Closing schools and commissaries would hurt so many people.
Good lord. You weren’t joking.

If “mass deportation” was good for American communities, the Trump team would be planning raids as rewards for Republican-leaning places. Farms in Texas, meat processing plants in Iowa or Indiana, construction sites in South Carolina. Not planning raids to punish Democratic-leaning Chicago.

I worked the first half of my career in Texas, where I paid into their retirement system. I moved to New Mexico and now pay into Social Security. This means I won't be penalized for having both and will get my full benefits. It's huge news for so many people.

ProPublica is doing amazing journalism. This article shook me.
Let me tell you a story – one of the more haunting I’ve seen in 20 years of journalism. It’s about greed, death and denial. It took two years to unravel one doctor’s myth, a hospital’s complicity in creating it, and a documented trail of suspicious deaths…🧵

I often have to let things process. I have my best ideas not at a meeting but up to 24 hours later.
🗃️ Great tip! For me this plays out unexpectedly when I’m doing something mundane like washing my hair (that’s actually when I’ve had a lot of “aha!” moments).

I like to spend the last 5-10 minutes of a research + writing session reviewing what I did and then writing a to-do list for the next day.
Writing tip: Let the unconscious mind sort things out.

I need to remember to be more deliberate about this advice. Worked for me today!--more by accident than design. I read over my sources before sleep and had a pretty clear-eyed approach to my writing this morning. @marcusrediker.bsky.social
