Happy Halloween!

The skull is an image of the DNA of stem cells from a mouse embryo taken by one of our postdocs, Gosia Borkowska.

The eyes of the skull are formed by the nucleus of two cells, while the surrounding ‘bones’ are chromosomes that are preparing for cell division.

Know a medic who's keen on research but struggling to find a way in that works with their NHS career? Please share our Chain Florey programme, designed to address the dwindling numbers of clinician scientists in the uk.
Just launched: the 1st video in our 6-part Chain Florey Clinician Scientist series at LMS!

Professor Declan O’Regan shares how we support early career clinicians bridging discovery and experimental medicine.

Despite calling himself a "total non-intellectual” his work to reprogramme somatic cells to pluripotent stem cells transformed the field of developmental biology.

I got permission to share this, and I'm extremely grateful for that.

The Onion got this letter from one of our subscribers in Alaska. She works with dementia patients and decided to leave a copy in the car for each one.

This email made my year. Read it and you'll see what I mean. People are good.

Furiously logging all the new budget news, laughing grimly that it landed *just after* we hit publish. Of course it did.

Grateful that the entire point of @unbreaking.org is to give us a durable platform where we can keep integrating new developments. We'll digest, contextualize & update next week.
I urge everyone to read Unbreaking’s new page on everything the govt is doing to destroy & diminish medical research funding.

It’s the best thing I’ve read on this topic: @lizneeley.bsky.social & co have such done an incredible job.

Puffins are social, so to attract them to Maine's rocky islands, National Audubon's Seabird Restoration Program put out decoys to attract real birds.

This puffin is trying to fit in with his new friend by standing on one leg.

The oldest science society in the world, The Royal Society, has a motto which is “Take No-one’s Word for it”. A guiding principle in science? Yes. But also perhaps an attack on the idea that those in power were to be believed regardless.
When I was 5, I loved science, which I took to be planets and magnets and chemicals and shit.

Soon I realized science was a collective human activity, and these were just the objects of its attention.

Anyway, whenever I read an OpEd on how science isn't political, I think "Are you 5 years old?"
