Middle East, governance, human rights; not keen on asymmetric power structures; more so justice. Wannabe sociologist. Senior Fellow @FPCThinkTank; Salam for Democracy and Human Rights. From Winnipeg 🇨🇦; now in Hackney 🇬🇧.Banner - the family 🐈, Herbert.
Flagging a BBC Radio 4 prog on Armenians. We talk a lot about governance structures; less about the people who live under them, be they Turk, Kurd, Armenian, Persian, Arab & so many more. Maybe it’s from a self-induced, high school Marx overdose, but I cannot help but think they have a common enemy.

How we treat minorities is a marker of how we treat everyone.

The Talish (Talysh) are a minority linguistic & religious community in northern Iran & Azerbaijan. Language is an Iranic language; they tend to be Sunni.

Scholars at Risk has flagged challenges they are facing in Azerbaijan.

Not what I expected on BBC Radio 4 this Sunday - Persian-accented Christianity & sometimes in Persian too, but all about Christianity.
یکی ازشان میگند که تعداد مسیحیان درایران در قرن سوم و چهارم میلادی نسبتا بزرگ بوده…

Dunno but wasn’t there many hundreds of years of peace under Ottoman rule? Maybe they should be given another shot…muhteşem beş yüz yıl and all that.

What could go wrong?

Hmmmm….

I’m 60. But I love Googoosh and lots of other stuff, too, like Martik and Haideh. But most of all, I’m 60. Do I risk getting tickets? It’s super close to where I live.

Yes @heissenstat.bsky.social

I love this formulation so much.

North Shore news, North Vancouver. This article on səlilwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) knowledge of kelp uses the name of the language in the article’s text. This seems right to me, in this context. A colonial state should try to do right by the people they occupied & this seems like one thing we can do.

If Scotland can have a unicorn as its national animal, why shouldn’t BC have the Ogopogo?

Amnesty’s Iran Researcher can only emphasise the protection of non-combatants. Civil society is reduced to pleading now, everywhere. Since powerful forces have eroded IHL & IHRL.

The IRGC’s Telegram channel posts locations of US bases in the Gulf. Where next for this conflict?
June 16, 2025 at 11:52 PM
The Telegram ‘channel’ for Iran’s Revolutionary Guards has never been quite so active. The ‘Pasdaran Cyber Army’ vaguely tries to tread the line between bravado & believable bluster & reality. All about choosing what you show.

Kuwait, that paragon of financial probity; of transparency & certainly no corruption, has a state body what speaks out against corruption. Good luck with that. It has amongst the worst reputations on this in the region. That & stripping citizens of nationality.

I love that the Insta feed of Ekrem İmamoğlu today featured former Uruguayan president, José Mujica, who passed away today. Kudos to İmamoğlu’s social media team for the great comments, too. ✊🫡

I wonder whether #sociology people here will find this amusing. Sent to me in Meta's FB (sorry). Not sure of its original source.

With my finger on Canada’s political pulse, I find myself amongst 2% of voters in North Van-Capilano.

CPC maintained 40+% of the popular vote. Big loser? NDP. Libs will have to take big CPC vote into consideration, but if they get less than 172, it will be tricky.

We need proportional voting.

Shout out to a party that will not win a single seat in Canada’s federal election next week. Ah, the nostalgia of a Marxist-Leninist Party (there are communists, too)
