Could rising antimicrobial activity in warmer soils make microbes less efficient at using carbon & push more CO₂ into the atmosphere?
🦠📈💊
Our new work in @isme-microbes.bsky.social explores how the combined effects of warming & AMR may alter microbial C processing

Microbial interactions between climate warming and antimicrobial resistance threaten soil carbon storage and global health
Abstract. Anthropogenic activities are impacting the environment in ways that may intersect and have compounding effects. In soil, the spread of antibiotic

I'm delighted our paper is out: doi.org/10.1093/isme...
With new SAR11 isolate genomes and time-series metagenomes, we reveal coastal and offshore SAR11 ecotypes, identify associated metabolic traits, and pinpoint selective gene sweeps as a likely evolutionary driver to niche partitioning. 🌊🦠
Habitat-specificity in SAR11 is associated with a few genes under high selection
Abstract. The order Pelagibacterales (SAR11) is the most abundant group of heterotrophic bacteria in the global surface ocean, where individual sublineages

Third and final field site ⛅🇨🇴
Páramo of Iguaque ⛰️
Challenging 3 hour sunrise climb at ~3,600 m.a.s.l. carrying batteries, tripods, samplers, PPE - but so worth it to sample amongst the frailejones 🤩
Hugely grateful to Santuario de Flora y Fauna de Iguaque for allowing us to work in this sacred place

"Polar geoengineering proposals raise false hopes for averting some disastrous consequences of climate change without rapidly cutting,,emissions"

"They risk encouraging complacency about the urgency of achieving net zero or may be used by powerful actors as an excuse to justify continued emissions"
High-tech plans to save polar ice will fail, new research finds
The plans could also unintentionally harm fragile polar ecosystems.

Our story about microbial methane is out! We found that reducing the expression of a key gene of methanogenesis modulates the isotopic composition of the methane:

Modulation of methyl–coenzyme M reductase expression alters the isotopic composition of microbial methane
The stable isotopic composition of microbial methane varies substantially, and the underlying causes are debated. In this work, we experimentally controlled the abundance of the central enzyme in meth...
