“Like with open source, open social is a compounding effort. Every mildly successful open social app lifts all open social apps. Every piece of shared infrastructure can benefit somebody else. At some point, open is bound to win.”

sadly, yeah. it’s too bad because ipv6 and UUIDv7 are goated
UUIDv4 is kinda like IPv4 in that later versions exist but most people pretend they don't exist

the thing i'm worried about is whether AI will decimate the "flow states" of knowledge work. i realize this is very selfish. i enjoy being in a flow state. i don't want to constantly be babysitting an unlearning intern who repeatedly violates instructions. even if they eventually produce good work

Windows is actually the worst system to build onto. What do you mean I need to reboot because I installed the C++ toolchain an IDE and cmake, else it won’t work?!

i can not stress enough just how Bad most cheap "new" Windows laptops are. they are manufactured ewaste that if i didn't knew any better i'd assume were made specifically to make people hate the idea of An Computer and lock themselves away to smartphone/tablet life forever

It's even better when I go home and I talk to my non-tech industry family about their exposure to AI, and they're like, "I've heard of ChatGPT, but I don't know much about it."

A life I'll never know.

homebrew really is one of the worst package manager available today. such a shame that graphical apps from nixpkgs are still broken

The next release of Determinate Nix will start addressing two issues that commonly confuse our users:

1. `nix-channel` is deprecated, and using it will issue a warning.
2. Using an indirect flakeref or implicit registry input in a flake.nix will also raise a warning.

I’m sorry but if your students use AI to write papers and you use AI to grade them zero school is happening. You are running together on a hamster wheel
Why even have a brain, any ideas, any ability to express them, any kind of communication with other people, any desire to solve problems or invent anything, any reason to learn, any use for your eyes or your heart, or any reason to teach or create

I really wish more developers or researchers would realise that using ChatGPT to write something like a README or using an AI image generator to generate a logo adds like a layer of gross goop onto a project. please stop doing it!! i know you're using it to look "professional" but it looks iiickyyy!

I love it when people ping every single maintainer of nixpkgs for their random package pull request review.

That's almost 4000 people 😂
