The Home Secretary can try to dismiss her own MPs, but the problem for the govt is that the views expressed by @nadiawhittomemp.bsky.social very likely resonate with Labour members and voters. And no-one can stop them from going elsewhere at the next election...
The government should be ashamed that its migration policies are being cheered on by Tommy Robinson and Reform.

Instead of standing up to anti-migrant hate, this is laying the foundations for the far-right.

I questioned the Home Secretary on how she can be proposing such obviously cruel policies.

The Italian right-wing coalition has two clear advantages over their opponents.

They agree on who constitutes the bulk of their electorate -- to whom they need to throw some bones. And they have found a simple system to select their PMs, which everybody within it has shown they will respect.

Usual, tired role-play within the Italian governing majority on Ukraine. 🥱

Only worth writing about it since it exposes, for the 25,000th times, how little the League matters on foreign policy and security matters = 0, nada, null.

There is a solid right-wing block of voters that has been supporting every coalition standing vs. the left, whether led by Berlusconi or Meloni. It's worth between 42 and 48 per cent of the electorate, remarkably loyal & composed overwhemingly by middle-class voters. Meloni needs to look after them.

The EPP has already decided how to resolve this conundrum. Treat ECR as moderate & responsible and strengthen the links with them, so that collaboration with the "other" radical and extreme right groups may not be necessary (most of the time). Weber & Meloni have been working towards this for months
Today, the conservatives (EPP) passed a major piece of EU legislation with the far-right groups in the EU Parliament, marking the breakdown of the cordon sanitaire. The EPP, under Weber, has decided to sacrifice long-term principles and stability for short-term political gains.

High profile meeting btw Italian & Albanian PMs today. Italy will continue to provide enthusiastic support to Albania's bid to join EU, while PM Rama, always so critical of countries' attempts to offload asylum processing to others, will reassure Meloni the "Albania plan" is still alive... 🤷‍♂️

New post: Labour’s Brexit stance is as untenable as their tax pledge

As public perception and econometric estimates of the damage caused by Brexit rise, Labour's refusal to discuss rejoining the EU's customs union or single market means more self harm.

Spot on, word by word.

But since Salvini has been cornered by Meloni into serving as Transport and Infrastructure Minister, a job that gives him no opportunity to "shine" on asylum or law and order, he feels compelled to keep pushing for some really big project that will be his legacy.

New episode in this series out now, as General Vannacci posts on Facebook to remind everyone that Mussolini gained power via legal means (hence, presumably, he wasn't THAT bad...), and the leghista of the old guard Zaia from the Veneto region retorts condemning the Racial Laws of 1938.
Nothing to see here. Just the faction led by General Vannacci, the League's deputy leader (now clashing openly with the leghista old guard that still dreams of federalism) organising a meeting on "Remigration" alongside several international guests from various organisations.

Opinion: Italy, often dismissed as Europe’s weak link in the past, has become a success story. This is shown clearly in the verdict of investors. on.ft.com/4nOh61N

When you keep doing the same thing (trying to out-Reform Reform UK) but expect a different result (Reform UK voters flocking to Labour, and progressive voters not being tempted by Polanski).

But sure, this time it may work.

As the new party "Northern Pact" (attempting to attract the leghisti of the old guard who still dream of "federalism" and reject Salvini's "new" League) prepares to hold its 1st Conference, its likely future leader tells press: "it is necessary to work on other projects now". In the north, of course
Italy's Court of Auditors has now rejected Salvini's plans for the construction of the controversial bridge connecting Sicily to the mainland across the Strait of Messina.
