Associate Professor at Montana State University. Really into beer, viruses, fluorescent microscopy, the outdoors, and beer. All opinions are my own.
Northern lights report from Bozeman, MT. So red, easily visible without camera.

Had the chance to visit the Museum of Illusion and took this image that can only be described as #nightmarefuel

Beauty can still be found in this world. Today was a good day.

Montana knows it is supposed to be summer. Montana does not care and greeted me with an icy truck this morning.

Yesterday, I had the privilege of introducing my graduate student one last time for his dissertation defense. He is now Dr. Gary Dunn after a knockout presentation on his work on producer cell effects on HSV-1 infection and virion associated proteins.

Way to turn out Bozeman to protest the injustices being perpetuated by our government! #Handsoff

Great energy at the Bozeman Stand Up for Science. Forgot to get pictures, but here was the double-sided poster I was proudly holding high. (sorry for those behind me).

A cold sunset to kick off the weekend. Stay warm all.

Bringing this one back for #FluorescenceFriday. I give you, the Covid wreath. As we get together for the holidays, try to not share infectious diseases with your friends and family. They are not the perfect give that keeps on giving. Stay safe and healthy out there.

Beautiful night for a brew. Beer of the week is a work in progress.

Obligatory Thanksgiving food pics. Pie, turkey, and full plates. Hope your holiday was equally filling.

Having finally figured out movies, I can officially upload the timelapse that my mind continually returns to when thinking about HSV-1 transmission. (Should have been in the first bluet about my research). 🧪🦠 #Virosky #Microsky

Beer of the week is one of my own. It is a Fall Saison. Very effervescent, strong Belgian yeast nose and flavor. A hint of the vanilla, cinnamon, and orange peel lingers on the mouth. Not bad for a first brew in over two years.

Happy Wednesday. Enjoy this winter sunset from Montana.

End of the week folks. Celebrating keeping myself from completely spiraling with a Fluffy Cow Hazy IPA from Gruner Brothers Brewing in Casper, Wyoming.

My solution was to thrown some herpes on it (trust me it works). Using fluorescent reporter expressing HSV-1, we observed inoculating dose dependent infection. Surprisingly, we saw faster onset of fluorescence and increasing frequency of productive replication. And with cool movies. 3/4

An aside from the science posts. Here is one of my favorite spots to do a quick hike. If you know where it is, keep it to yourself, no reason to make it more crowded.

It also led to a cool movie of dual-labeled virions entering cells. check out the paper for others.

Starting here is a great excuse to bring up one of my more impactful, yet head-scratching observations. When we look at alphaherpes virus spread from neurons, we see that that majority of spread events involve limited numbers of virus. #FluorescenceFriday

One of the things that gets me excited about science is the unexplainable. This is an image of a neuron infected with a Pseudorabies virus that will express fluorescent proteins. It is weird and I have no idea what these extensions are or if they are important for viral replication and spread.
