I’m sick reading the Schools of Hope details. The state of FL is attempting to seize Duval owned public school facilities & let for-profit charter corporations use them for free. DCPS must pay for all school services even though the charter corp. plans full takeovers in 5 years.

A new Florida state law is allowing out-of-town for-profit charter school corporations to use Duval County public school facilities, free of charge. Mater Academy out of Miami has submitted a proposal to start taking over A, B, C rated public schools. That was never part of the charter school deal.

May was actually a good month for Florida’s environment. FL state parks were protected from development, the FL legislature unanimously banned oil drilling in the Apalachicola river basin & Guana was saved. Bipartisan support across the board. Great report by James Call.
'A monumental moment': How grassroots power is reshaping Florida's environmental agenda
Oil drilling? Development at state parks? Sensitive land swaps? All shot down recently. Advocates are pinching themselves: Is this really Florida?

Pres Trump & Mike Johnson want the federal tax code to help defund local public schools by giving tax breaks to wealthy families already enrolled in private school. 70% of FL public vouchers go to existing private school families. They’re stealing from the poor & giving the money to the 1%.
“If it uses taxpayer $$ for private K12 tuition it’s a voucher. Most voucher users were already in private school. For the rest: horrific learning loss.”

My take @npr.org on the new GOP tax bill backed by Betsy DeVos that would force vouchers into all states.

NPR asked researchers, advocates, tax experts, a parent and a public school leader for their thoughts on this first-of-its-kind national voucher plan. Here's what they said.

This was one of the lines where it was obvious JD had pre-written talking points that he had practiced in the mirror before hand. An absolute disgrace to try to turn US foreign policy into one of Trump’s reality TV shows. Never too early to start talking about impeachment. 🇺🇸
ZELENSKYY: Putin broke the ceasefire. What kind of diplomacy, JD, are you speaking about?

Really remarkable stuff. Why would a US ally trust the Republican Party ever again?
To be clear, the Vance/Musk intervention did not change the outcome. Still, the fact that it happened changes German and European politics forever
🇩🇪🇺🇸 “Look at these recent interventions into Germany by Mr. Elon Musk. Interventions from DC are no less dramatic, drastic & brazen than those from Moscow. We are massively under pressure from two sides.” — Friedrich Merz.

A great 3 pack of articles if you want to better understand the German election on Sunday & Elon & Vance’s attempted involvement.
TLDR: The delivery of Vance’s speech was boorish & the context was terrible & it may backfire helping to consolidate the centrists. That or Europe is in big trouble.

Dear Florida - the idea of eliminating property taxes in a state with such poorly funded education to begin with and no income tax is absurd & will crush what remains of k12 schooling in FL.

Has the President’s Emergency Plan For AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) actually saved millions of lives?

We weren't sure, so we spent the last two weekends looking deeply into multiple lines of evidence. The short answer: PEPFAR saved between 7.5 and 30 million lives in the first 15 years of its existence.

Most of the lives PEPFAR saved, like most HIV patients in Africa, were likely women and children.

It all blends together but this has to be one of the bottom 5 worst days of the Trump regime. A North Korea level response to a national tragedy & a pair of unfit nominations in qualifications, judgment & temperament in front of the Senate. Within a week and we’re back to 2020 level buffoonery.

A fiscal conservative doesn’t pass laws they don’t want to pay for or spends taxpayer money to run political ads for a preferred outcome on constitutional amendments. Everything about the current FLGOP is worst kind of big government. Subsidizing the rich & punishing the poor.

What kind of judge would go along this corrupt scheme? 🤔
Happening in North Carolina right now: A Republican who just lost a state supreme court election is using a horseshit legal theory cooked up by Republican activists to ask the Republican majority *on the same court he wants to join* to overturn his loss and make him a justice anyway
Republicans Do Not Think People Are Entitled to Elections Anymore
In North Carolina, Republican state supreme court justices will soon decide whether to overturn an election to seat a Republican who lost it.

The Florida GOP is the party of insurance companies, utilities, & .01% donors. They are corrupt from top to bottom & run culture war campaigns to scare people, & then pass laws written by their corporate donors. God help us if democrats can’t beat the Florida strategy on its way to DC.
