It's a great winter read, I hope you like it! You'll be surprised by how different it is, but hopefully in a good way. It's fun to try and figure out how much Victor is lying and there's so much mutual obsession/revenge between Victor and the monster that you can easily do a queer reading

Yes! In the books Victor's dad is just a random nice guy who supports his son and Victor doesn't stick around to "raise" his creature, but I liked the movie's choice to show the cycle of violence. Book monster resorts to violence to get Victor's attention so it wasn't totally out of nowhere.

I think GdT had an optimistic take on the Monster which is why I don't mind that he made Elizabeth a main character and emphasized love and gentleness between them, but I think the Victor/creature bond was de-emphasized as a result which is kind of a shame.

What I love most from the book is the theme of nature being literally awesome and unknowable, eluding man's harness. The scene of Victor in the mountains during the storm, awed by its terrible beauty, and the monster appearing as its embodiment. Also the taut, obsessive bond between Victor/creature.

"In a literal sense, her breasts were clothed. Yet the flesh lurked beneath like a bear in its den. A shark in twin puddles. Two breasts in a bra. Boobing spitefully, in spite of me."

Super hard to summarize this book, but it's about a rebellion against 2 sorcerer-tyrants and against complacency under their rule. Also about how the past can spur us into action but also haunt us and twist us into terrible shapes; the real HEA is being able to let go.

This was my Halloweekend watch as well! I loved the dreamy look of things and how they left it a mystery. I thought they were going to have the boy(s) catch up to to the girls to emphasize the sensuality v. structure theme, but I love that the boys are just haunted by the idea of the girls instead.

I've never dealt with WIC but it's an amazing idea for a program- baby food is so expensive, and new parents need all the support they can get!

My fic "It Being Late..." pulls a lot from my life during that time period, including the part about SNAP. This scene has always been near and dear to me because I really had to navigate it with my then-bf.
