But for real: Victoria herself was basically in permanent mourning, which set a trend, but at same time (post-1858) synthetic dyes made vibrant color possible in clothing - like mauve/mauvein. The societal expectation of women’s mourning eclipsed personal expression through dress. Not so with men.
