It’s past time for action. Head to donoharmbc.ca/masks-in-hea... to join our renewed calls for BC to restore & improve healthcare mask protections, including closing loopholes & making respirators (like N95 masks) the default choice 😷

ACTION ALERT 📣 BC is falling behind in protecting patients & healthcare workers. As we enter fall/winter, Newfoundland, Labrador, PEI, major Quebec & Ontario hospitals & more have already restored mask requirements in healthcare - yet so far, BC has failed to take action.

Wastewater testing in BC has recently decreased in frequency, and several wastewater plants have stopped testing entirely, which is likely to result in less accurate data.

With school back in session and the weather starting to cool down, we’re seeing COVID rates high across Canada (~1 in every 65 people is infected), and very high in BC (~1 in 47). The current dominant COVID lineage in most of BC is still NB.1.8.1, nicknamed “razor blade throat”.

COVID rates are moderate across Canada (~1 in every 120 people), and moderate in BC (~1 in 121). Moderate does not mean there is no risk, and COVID in BC is currently on an upward trend. The current dominant COVID lineage is NB.1.8.1, nicknamed “razor blade throat”.

🧵 Heavy news, folks. Yesterday, BC removed the healthcare mask requirement - ignoring patients, workers, researchers & BC’s Human Rights Commissioner. This is amid ongoing healthcare outbreaks, & BC PHO’s own admission that we face rising measles risks & future surges of COVID-19.

We’ve also included BCCDC Wastewater Surveillance data to show the trends in Influenza A and B, as well as RSV by region. (Note that BC wastewater reporting changes for SARS-CoV-2 in particular have caused some confusion in the past - see analysis by danwalker9999 on X for more.)

Mar 15-28 hazard index from the
team at Covid-19 Resources Canada, based on federal wastewater data. COVID hazards are very high in Canada (~1 in 143 people) & high in BC (~1 in 142). While this isn’t the highest in recent memory, COVID is still circulating, & analysis suggests it’s increasing.
