Wondering whether economic growth helps achieve the world I long for: free of poverty, catastrophic risks, animal oppression & spiritual emptiness.

Please, growth fans & degrowth fans!

Give me your best arguments against the "as well" in this claim: "Yes, growth promotes innovation - but growth per se might *as well* promote innovation in dirty tech as in clean tech"

Was hilft denn dem Klima *wirklich*?

What saved the sperm whales? Some say new technology (fossil fuels), others say government regulation.

Sober, but well-argued and helpful...

An ASI future is hard to plan for now. But: if we do ever plan for it, it will be during an AGI time -- and we can work now towards giving *this* time a political environment that is conducive to sound choices.

It's mindboggling to become a father as a political philosopher: I find myself trying so hard to replace my kids' deontological takes with a focus on the common good (in particular: exorcising their radical egalitarianism for the sake of smth like @rychappell.bsky.social's beneficentrism).

Gesucht: Schweizer Schienennetz inkl. Kantonsgrenzen.

2-year old son: "The scooter is hurt"
Me: "A scooter can't be hurt -- I think"

Wait what -- did I just add "I think"?!

I must've been brainwashed too hard by all these plant sentience, digital minds, consciousness-emerging-out-of-complexity discussions etc.

It's astonishing that the chair (one of the top three AI researchers) felt the need to precede this report by an update -- less than two months (!!) after the end of the writing period. Too much has happened in the meantime.
Today, we are publishing the first-ever International AI Safety Report, backed by 30 countries and the OECD, UN, and EU.

It summarises the state of the science on AI capabilities and risks, and how to mitigate those risks. 🧵

[AI catastrophic risk explainer for normal people]

Which short explainer currently most compellingly makes the case for taking AI safety very seriously?

(PS: Optimally, the explainer would add 2-3 ideas for action steps that normal people can take if they become convinced)

In unserem Video liefert ETH-Forscherin Ulrike Lohmann vom @usyseth.bsky.social Antworten: www.republik.ch/2025/01/24/k...

Climate activist @luisaneubauer.bsky.social said: "I don’t think it’s a particularly radical demand to ask governments to keep their promises" ---> In our article, we ask whether it's *really* such a big issue if govrnments do less (or more!) than they said they would

We should care about AI's impact on the environment. But this means focusing on its indirect impact, eg its impact via:
-- economic growth
-- innovation
-- democracy & governance
-- etc

In comparison, the relevance of the direct impact is negligible -- see below...

I'm looking for an *evidence-based* list of the *most popular* objections against ambitious climate action.

Any advice where -- or even just how -- to find this?

I'm not looking for general psychological obstacles against climate action, but rather obstacles that take the form of arguments.
