"(GAME) is not speaking a dialect I am already broadly familiar with, and is therefore objectively bad" is such a weirdly stunted and incurious idea that I think people maybe embrace because it lets them off the hook from doing what they see as homework and/or vegetables.
It's a good point. Some folks think that those old days of esoteric game design was just put up with because there wasn't any other games around and you deal with whatever, but a lot of that obtuseness was a post-Tower of Druaga influence, a game that was very influential in Japanese game design.
