Y is for Dr Mike Youle

Mike Youle is a British doctor and clinical researcher specialising in HIV and AIDS treatment. He began treating HIV and AIDS patients at St Stephen’s Hospital (now Chelsea and Westminster) in London in the mid-1980s.

HIV and women intersect in multiple ways from those living with the virus, to mother-child transmission and impact on the family to name a few. As of 2023, 53% of people living with HIV were women according to UNAIDS.

Lighting candles as an act of remembrance has been a long religious tradition in Western Europe. In more recent times this has developed into a form of non-violent protest or a show of support for a specific cause.

U stands for U = U: Undetectable = Untransmittable.

The Prevention Access Campaign (PAC) launched the U=U campaign in 2016 to promote the largely unknown fact: people living with HIV who are on treatment and have an undetectable viral load cannot sexually transmit HIV.

Terry Higgins was born on 10 June 1945 in Haverfordwest in Wales. As a young man he joined the navy, before moving to London and taking various jobs, including as a Hansard reporter for the House of Commons.

S is for SAM (Scottish AIDS Monitor)

Scottish AIDS Monitor (SAM) was founded in 1983 in Edinburgh, by Derek Ogg (1954-2020), after he had become concerned after hearing of an illness affecting young gay men in United States in early 1980s.

R is for Recreational Drugs

One of the largest groups living with HIV in 1980s-90s were people who inject drugs in the UK. In Simon Garfield's book, The End of Innocence: Britain in the Time of AIDS, by the end of 1994, 2664 people had been diagnosed, making up 12% of cases.

Q is for Quilt

The AIDS Memorial Quilt is considered the largest community arts project in history. It was conceived in 1985 by the American HIV and LGBTQ activist, Cleve Jones and in 1987 the NAMES AIDS Memorial Quilt was created in San Francisco.

P is for Prison

Cases of AIDS first appeared in Europe in the early 1980s, and prisons were soon identified as requiring action due to the potential high levels of HIV transmission through injecting drug use in prison populations.

N is for the National AIDS Helpline

Telephone helplines played a vital role in providing information about #HIV in the 1980s-1990s. Many of the early helplines that developed from local gay organisations that had existing telephone counselling services.

M is for Mildmay

Mildmay Mission Hospital based in Bethnal Green, London, in 1988 opened the first AIDS Hospice in Europe.

The Mildmay continues to provide HIV care and last year was honoured with the naming of the London Overground line for its work during the AIDS crisis.

The archives of HIV and AIDS can often be found in community archives of LGBTQ+ groups across the UK. One of the largest collections, LGBT Foundation, can be found at the Manchester Central Library.
