An @OutDoorAfro Hero?
Tiffany Slaton set out for a 3-day solo camping trip in Fresno County, but ended up lost for 24 days in the Sierra Nevada mountains.

Surviving on wild leeks and boiled snow, she battled 13 snowstorms, reached altitudes of 11,000 ft, lost 10 lbs, and abandoned her bike, tent, and sleeping bags.
Hiker missing for 3 weeks details her survival journey in California mountains

When I was a kid, the last days of school were spent dreaming about how we'd spend summer vacation. What did we call our summer list of fun and challenging things to do? - because Bucket List wasn't part of my vocabulary then.

Wow
They did it. They terminated my NEH grant. Their letter went to my junk mail. This is an active grant that would have finished on June 30.

“Your grant’s immediate termination is necessary to safeguard the interests of the federal government”

They are so afraid of us.

But look at how many people will suffer from canceling that grant. At 94cents, it's hella cost-effective for the real goal of this administration

so special ed programs are getting gutted because their internal documentation used the term "transition" when talking about helping disabled kids enter the working world. they're literally striking at that word wherever they see it.

We @chronicle.com reported on Friday that applications for F31 diversity fellowships had been withdrawn.

Now, multiple scholars tell me their applications have been re-assigned to their original study sections, in a reversal of instructions NIH officials gave reviewers last week. #AcademicSky
‘We’re Being Punished’: NIH Tosses Some Grant Applications From Minority Researchers
The sudden withdrawal affects early-career scholars who applied for a prestigious federal grant with a diversity notation — flagging that they came from underrepresented backgrounds.

Putting applications on the bottom of the stack because you "might not be allowed to review them" is a classic example of "obeying in advance".

For anyone in a similar situation, Do Not Do That.

Force them to state explicitly that they want these things done. That creates grounds for appeal.

Thanks to all of you amplifying this appalling decision, there is now a very helpful article in @chronicle.com. If you have institutional access, send it to your member of Congress. (I know this may be overtaken by the indirect cost issue but we can push on both.) www.chronicle.com/article/were...

The CSR comm I'm on just pulled all Diversity F grants from the current review cycle. These apps are reviewed alongside (and by the same criteria) as all other F grants. So, instead of helping these trainees, they will actually be punished by having their grant reviews delayed at least 1 cycle !?!?

I am obviously aware of how the Trump EOs are an Orwellian outrage to language, but I still think it is valuable to compare their real-life actions to what they wrote down! That is one way that accountability works!

This is especially important in light of @jamellebouie.net's post today. This is explicitly an effort to re-segregate science. There is no reason these applications couldn't have been considered in the regular pool - the criteria are the same. bsky.app/profile/jame...
i'll be blunt, if you are someone who is vocal about the ways that diversity efforts "divide the working class" but silent about the ways that *actual racism and discrimination* divide the working class, then i think you're just an opportunist

Just in case you thought that removing DEI criteria would mean that everyone is competing equally: NIH is removing grad students from underrepresented backgrounds from the applicant pool altogether. Their applications will not be considered. Other students, not from these backgrounds, will be.

An EEOC admin. judge sent a fiery all-department email this AM alleging:
1. Trump's exec orders & instructions to target private citizens with them are illegal.
2. the judge had sent an earlier email with a similar tone yesterday that later vanished from their sent folder & colleagues' inboxes.

I don't understand this level of gymnastics.
But let me also be clear, I know this reactionary behavior ALL to well: it's the "wait and see", "I need more facts/information" response.
I'm amazed (& frustrated) when I see folks giving benefits of doubt to harmful systems.
