Losses like these are, for an old man like me, the most devastating of all losses. Programs like these started my career in 1980 and to deny entry portals to the future scientists of America is to deny our future as a nation 🧪
I was PREP cohort #1. Today was the LAST UNC PREP symposium. Watching Dr. Joshua Hall, who was the Director my year and 11 years after, give the closing keynote was 😭🥹

But what was built cannot be undone. Our community is strong and all 137 of us are not going anywhere 💪🏾

Need good news? Grand Cayman voters sank cruise pier development! I fought against this years ago, did local radio, tv. Got trolled. Thankful to some 65% that voted against it. Would have caused huge reef loss, impacted local businesses, jobs. Tourism is not the enemy but it needs to be done right.

Basic research is the cornerstone of scientific progress in all realms. Basic science is what hasn't been applied yet. The govt spends $200B/yr on R&D knowing that rewards are yrs away. Google, born in 1994, had a $4M federal grant to help build digital libraries.

I never imagined I would see something like this happen to federally funded research in the US. I am heartbroken for all the researchers whose grants have been terminated and devastated for all the patients whose current (and future) treatments are being impacted 🧪 💔

A recent paper led by collaboration members Yoonsoo Kim and Elias Most (both at Caltech) is in @aasnova.org today! This work explores the formation of strongly magnetized "monster" shocks and a transient "black hole pulsar" state from mergers of a magnetized neutron star and a black hole.

I know NIH is ~5x bigger than NSF but I think the gutting of NSF is getting a lot less than 1/5 the attention— in the news media and in higher ed— compared with what's happened to NIH.

GOOD NEWS! Moderna’s combination COVID/influenza vaccine candidate mRNA-1083 has OUTPERFORMED the current standalone vaccines for BOTH viruses in a large (8000+) Phase III trial. A combination vaccine would make it easier for people to get vaccinated against COVID and influenza at the same time. 🧪🧵⬇️
