January 27 is Holocaust Remembrance Day. Today 80 years ago in 1945 the Red Army liberated Auschwitz, where my (Polish) second cousin was killed. Pray for the repose in Paradise of all those who died in the Holocaust and keep their memory for future generations.

Got some Tenrikyo theology books. Tenrikyo was the first Japanese new religion I visited and I just visited again. They are monotheistic, panentheistic, with a complex choreographed Liturgy. There are also some fascinating parallels between the emergences of Ancient Judaism and Tenrikyo.

This poem is deeply touching to me. Before I ever proved I have Indian ancestry and how, I felt a deep connection to India, just as I always have to Poland and Israel. The longing for the lost Indian motherland and some of my ancestors wandering away (or escaping) from it.

Bare Your holy arm
and hasten the End for salvation -
Avenge the vengeance of Your servants' blood
from the wicked nation.
For the triumph is too long delayed for us,
and there is no end to days of evil,
Repel the Red One in the nethermost shadow
and establish for us the seven shepherds.

Their altar has their symbol on it, an ikebana, a rice offering, and a gohanzen scroll. Their services are short, simply composed of chanting of Buddhist hymns with some modifications from traditional Shin Buddhist chants. They were friendly and open to conversation.

After visiting the Japanese Mass, I visited a group categorized as a Japanese New Religion called Jodo Shinshu Shinran Kai. They come from Shin Buddhism, and consider themselves to still be the same group, hence rejecting the designation of New Religion.

Yesterday, I attended a Japanese Catholic Mass. Most responses were chanted in Latin tune but in Japanese so the intonation was different than if it had been Latin.

Yesterday I visited a small Japanese New Religion called Bunmei. Bunmei is one of the Divine Light groups, which emerged from the split between them and Sukyo Mahikari over succession of their mother organization after the founders' death.

Book of Mormon Studies at SBL! I'll have to try and drop in. One of the religions I periodically study, wonderful people. I've attended the services of five branches of Mormonism and have read the whole Book of Mormon.

If any of you will be at the Society of Biblical Literature this weekend let me know. It would be nice to meet there. I will be presenting my paper "Genesis 1:1-2:3 as an Ancient Sukkot Hymn" on Saturday at 11 AM.

Some of the academic works I have recently read. I have been branching out in my inter-religious studies to various faiths like Yaresanism and Yezidism: 2 Iranian monotheisms. Fostering better understanding and dialogue for a better world in spite of our differences is a beneficial thing.

Indian Orthodox saint Vattasseril Geevarghese Malpan affirming the pre-resurrection mortality of Christ's Body: "Because His Body was made incorruptible at the Resurrection, never again have death or suffering authority over Him." This is a crucial part of orthodox Miaphysitism.

The story of Jonah points us to the universality of Divine grace. God's mercy is for the whole world, including the people we are averse to or even hate. That grace was an image of Christ descending into Leviathan (the "sea monster" or Hades) of death and raising up all people.

"And I heard a voice from heaven saying, 'Write this: Blessed are the dead who from now on die in the Lord.' 'Yes,' says the Spirit, 'they will rest from their labors, for their deeds follow them.'"

Blessed Feast Day of St. Moshe Bar Kepha, the great Bishop of Mosul. May his prayers be with us all. Below is a photo of his successor, Mor Nicodemus, as I know of no icon of him.

"When Christ the Son and the true Life had tasted death of His own will, and had in the flesh endured the holy Cross for the sake of our salvation, and like blessed and life-giving Seed had been cast and sown within the womb of the earth, Life caused many to spring forth" ~St. Severus of Antioch
