Listening to witnesses being sworn in at a Parliamentary Enquiry on university governance ending with “so help me god”. Wondered about the power of these words in a largely secular & multicultural society that Australia is today. Keep this for historical gravitas or maybe we need an alternative?

Parliamentary Inquiry into the NSW University Sector - a difficult day for my university. Expertly chaired by The Hon. Dr Sarah KAINE, BEc, PhD MLC (thank you). Acknowledging everyone who spoke today & especially the 3 #UTS students. #Governance #UniversityGovernance #OperationalSustainability

Submitting abstracts with my PhD students to 2026 meetings & hitting home that I still need a lot more of 2025 to achieve that long academic list!! #LorneCancer (www.lornecancer.org) #LorneGenome (www.lornegenome.org)

Seems that #Darwinian selection is at play in our pond. Breeding when they feel like it, increasingly survivors are black baby fish that eventually turn white. Sometimes they’re quite big before they turn. Camouflage is excellent!! Give it 50 yrs & I think all fish could be white. #NaturalSelection

Plates of pasta about to go down well as our research group hosted Professor Caroline Ford and Dr Cecilia Ng on a visit to consider us as a research project site for the new Ainsworth Endometriosis Research Institute (AERI). We had lots to talk about! #endometriosis #AERI

Exceptional final 3 Minute Thesis competition at my university this week. #STEM ones my favourites - Samara Bridge from my Faculty on new ways to detect colorectal cancer with biosensors (brilliant!) & Adam Haysom-McDowell on lung cancer. Adam's slide was superb! So creative. #3MT #PhDStudents 🧪

Learned from an acquaintance of a 6 yr old little girl, friend of his little girl, who died 10 days ago in Sydney from Influenza Type A. Tragic beyond words. Please get your flu jab & decrease the chance of your body being a vessel to take this virus to someone who may die from it. #vaccination #flu

All scientists are good cooks I believe! Here is one of my weekend lunch winter soups. Add truffle oil & a little yoghurt & it’s a flavour explosion in your mouth - leek, zucchini, Italian parsley, broccoli, chickpeas, garlic, fennel, lemon juice, vegie stock. #soup #ScientistsWhoCook

#Perplexity is a helpful resource in science. I ask my question, look at the response, and then always ask "show me the publications" that I then read. If we don't use these tools we will be like ostriches with heads in the sand. If we use them without checks & balances; however, we are fools. #AI

In January, I visited Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park. It was freezing, the park nearly empty as I rang the peace bell with my daughter. Profound, humbling & moving experience. I wish time in this park was mandatory for all world leaders who need to pause & think on what they're doing. #Hiroshima #war

When you sit down to review a grant...hoping you can just fit it in before the deadline...but become entranced by the innovation & creativity demonstrated by a young researcher & you end up giving it hours because it's just that interesting & good. These feelings remind me of why I am a scientist. 🧪

Congrats to Teagan Fisher who started her PhD in our group in Feb on award of a scholarship from #NECST to work on links between #ovariancancer and #endometriosis 🎉🎈. While we've trained honours students in this field, Teagan is our group's 1st PhD candidate. Looking forward to discoveries!
