Another soldier with his beloved: "How warm you are," he said with devotion, "how full of life, how sweet your breathing. “What comes after you will not be breathing; it will be cold forever.... It will be like this, the way I feel it now, in this silent moment when I can feel your breath." The use of expressions such as "arteries" and "full-blooded" may already have alerted attentive readers to the fact that the love objects in all three of these cases are horses.
