Went to my kids' school yesterday for parents' night, and boy did my body exactly know what to do:

Crappy picture of my notebook. Apart from, well, notes, it shows what I doodled with my pen during parents' night: First it was a rock with some moss and grass, then came a whole underwater world with plants, a snail, a big fish and some smaller ones as well as creepy eyes in an underwater cave.

More pages from Mizukis manga. More of the protagonist, the cat and sometimes plant-shaped, at other times brain-like biological structures. Also, for some reason, naked female bodies. Another double page from Mizukis manga. We see Kumagusu walking around town, lying naked on his home's floor writing something, and what looks like a drawing of a mythical Japanese merman-esque sea creature. Kumagusu often relied on folk tales to find the slime mold specimen he wanted to study.

How I wish this #manga by Mizuki Shigeru would be translated into English!

He portrays the life of one of Japan’s most fascinating intellectuals, Kumagusu Minakata – naturalist, Buddhist micobiologist and probably Japan’s first environmental activist.

I’m a huge admirer of comic artist Larry Marder, and love this #FantasticFour-themed cover by him.

It was FF-co-creator #jackkirby who – through his art – introduced Marder to Native American designs, especially #hopi kachinas.

A cover of Larry Marder's comic book "Tales of the Beanworld" issue number 19, published by Eclipse comics in 1991. At the top you can see Heyoka, the bean who does everything upside-down and backwards bean, flying through a constellation of shapes reminiscent of the Fantastic Four. It's hard to describe the way this arrangement hovers between abstract and figurative, using basic geometrical shapes that correspond to the way the Fantastic Four have been portrayed in the comics by artist and co-creator Jack Kirby. If you know the comics, though, certain colors and textures form an unequivocal portrayal of these comic characters.

You can see Wanda in a pink dress with a huge bow on her waist, shouder pads and lots of lace – looks kind of like a wedding cake. Her hair is fuller, her face more rounded. Next to her is the silhouette of a girl the next panel will reveal as Death. Two text boxes read in the voice of main character Barbie: I dream of Wanda. Only she’s perfect. She reminds me of Glinda in the Oz movie, something I’m sure she’d get a huge kick out of hearing. And when I say perfect, I mean perfect. Drop-dead gorgeous. There’s nothing camp about her, nothing artificial. And she looks happy.

I’m a proud dad today.

In her English test my daughter was told to read an autobiographical text and then infer the author’s gender from hobbies like ”skateboarding”.

She wouldn’t have any of it.

An actual English test for a German class. The task reads: “Read the text again. Who do you think wrote it? Is it a boy or a girl? Explain your decision by referring to specific points in the text. I think it’s a boy /it’s a girl, because…” The handwritten answer of the student reads: “I have no idea if it’s a boy or a girl. And there are no arguments for one side, because every girl and every boy writes differently, because we are all different people with different characters, so why should I decide on a gender group? Maybe it’s neither a girl nor a boy. And I know I write “he” but that was just a reflex (a bad reflex). Especially in an exam or in normal class we should not tell people that there are typical gender roles or that a girl writes likes this and a boy like that. I hope you understand me, because I really can’t find arguments for one side and I also don’t want to.

A rather blurry version of David Lynch's absurdist comic strip "The Angriest Dog in the World". The strip always featured the same, repetitive image of a growling dog on a leash in a garden. Only the speech bubbles from the adjacent building would change in every strip. The word balloon here proclaims: "Today is today and tommorow [sic] is not today." Very true.

A page from Carson Grubaugh's "The Abolition of Man", in which he illustrates C.S. Lewis' text with, I believe, Midjourney results. The six panels show dark figures, red shapes, among them a bus, and all in all look symbolic and eerie. Two double pages of the comic "Fastwalkers" by Ilan Manouach. You can't see a lot of details, but from afar it looks like a cross-breed of coloured Manga and Cronenberg body horror. The text on Manouach's homepage reads: "   Born out of Manouach’s ongoing experimentation with the informational abundance and affective economies of comics, this is a wildly vibrant hallucinogenic book in which all text and images have been produced by machine learning.
