It is clear to me that LLMs are the new generation of programming language, the biggest paradigm shift in SWE since assembly → 3GLs.

The parallels and differences are fascinating.

Take interpreted vs compiled. Previously a property of the *language*, now a property of the *program*.

Tools don’t make great software, thinking does, and every time we outsource understanding to a tool, whether it’s a framework or an AI, we quietly accept worse outcomes later.

Spoke to Shleagh Fogarty yesterday sbout why the Chancellor is wrong: our “student loan” system is not remotely fair. It’s regressive and embedding inter and intra generational wealth inequality. It’s not a loan system, it’s a bad grad tax in all but name.

Horrified & heartbroken by the latest ICE murder in Minneapolis.

Americans, please know how many millions of us here in the UK are sickened by Trump and his fascist thugs, and stand in solidarity with all of you resisting them 🇬🇧🇺🇸

Last night, I was chatting in the hotel bar with a bunch of conference speakers at Goto-CPH about how evil PR-driven code reviews are (we were all in agreement), and Martin Fowler brought up an interesting point. The best time to review your code is when you use it.

To "Chat it", perhaps?

Messy code and fancy code are two sides of the same coin. Code can become confusing and deceitful by either neglect or ornamentation.

*Clean*/*good*/*expert*/*professional* code--call it what you may--isn't opulent, decorated, fancy, high-concept stuff.

It's profoundly ordinary.

Today I’m on strike. For journalism without fear or favour; for the future of the Guardian; and most of all for our beloved newspaper The Observer, 233 years old today, being put at existential by its billionaire owner. Happy birthday to The Observer 🎂❤️.
