Apropos of the moment:

"One day somebody will explain to me why it is that, at a time when science has never been wiser, or the truth more stark, or human knowledge more available, populists and liars are in such pressing demand."

This makes perfect sense. Join us at the rallies. Put Canadian flag stickers on the back window of your car. Fly the Canadian Flag at home. Support canvassers on their rounds.

The UCP has made 2025 one of the darkest years for Alberta’s democracy.

Albertans can turn on the lights in 2026.

By simply being Albertan.

Let me explain. 🧵 open.substack.com/pub/drjaredw...

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz on the end of the Pax Americana, yesterday in Munich, Germany.

“Dear friends, the decades of the Pax Americana are largely over for us in Europe, and for us in Germany, as well. It no longer exists as we know it. And nostalgia won’t change that.

Anything past -20C I've termed as "minus ridiculous", so cold you really don't care how bad.

If only we could bottle and distribute the happiness.
When the mercury plummets to -40° (where Celsius and Fahrenheit finally agree), most sensible creatures burrow inward. But not in the Yukon. Here, in this land where exhaled breath crystallizes mid-air and exposed skin stings within seconds, I found myself moved to dance Bhangra.

On Dec. 13, 1758, the Duke William was transporting Acadians to France from Prince Edward Island.
Everyone on the ship was deported in the Acadian Expulsion.
Damaged in a storm, she took 3 days to sink. Over 360 people died.
This is the story.

Always the villain, but done quite well.
On this day in 1928, John Colicos was born in Toronto.
A Stratford Festival veteran, he was the first person to play a Klingon on Star Trek (Commander Kor). He also appeared on The National Dream, Battlestar Galactica and Star Trek: DS9 (reprising Kor role). He died in 2000.

I think many think if mid-terms are sucessful (if they happen and aren’t just for show) for the Dems that things will go back to normal - I highly doubt it 🇺🇸 - the damage is too great.

US has long since blown through the notion of unitary executive theory.
It is now a monarchical klepto-executive.
New, from me: by embracing unitary executive theory, the Supreme Court is moving towards making all public employees fireable at the will of the President.

This will not just hurt government competence, it will aid democratic backsliding. 🧵
