also fun fact: some French officials also thought that helping Israel get the bomb would be useful because the powerful Jewish lobby in the US could then convince US officials to cooperate on atomic matters.
The moment I learned that there were people in the British Foreign Office who no joke thought that what became the Balfour Declaration was a good idea because it would convince the International Jewish Banking Conspiracy to intervene on their side in WW1 was when I became the Joker, for the record.

At least, that is how Pierre Guillaumat justifies this assistance a posteriori. Not true for all, many had other non-batshit stupid motives, but Guillaumat was a major player.
