I posted something pushing back against the Carter-as-failed-president narrative yesterday, but in today's Cup of Coffee newsletter (which, if you're a baseball fan, you should definitely subscribe to) @craigcalcaterra.bsky.social put it much more eloquently than I did:
I think that's wrong. I think that Jimmy Carter set a pretty damn great example as a president. That's the case even if he lost in 1980 and even if we automatically default to casting losing politicians as failures. Jimmy Carter was the last guy to lead this country who spoke to us like grownups. He was the last guy who unambiguously asked for at least some amount of shared sacrifice. He was the last president who did not accept the premise that government is the enemy of everyday people as opposed to the vehicle via which people manage their country and at least try to make each other's lives better. Even the three Democrats who have held the presidency since him have accepted that premise and have blown a lot of political capital on working around it in an effort not to offend the political right. Those three may have accomplished some things Carter never could have by doing so, but by catering to anti-government framing they, perversely, limited the ability of government to solve problems and improve people's lives by agreeing to Republicans' definition of what is and what is not acceptable for government to do. I'm not going to go to the mat to defend the Carter presidency, as (a) it was certainly not wonderful; and (b) I know damn well that I won't convince more than a handful of people that anything matters in politics beyond "scoreboard." But I consider America being given the Crisis of Confidence speech specifically and being presented with Jimmy Carter's civic and moral example in general, only to abandon virtually everything about them wholesale, to be the point when Americans turned their backs on what truly made this country great. It was at that point that the country decided that it was not just OK but it was virtuous to be selfish and to reject even the suggestion of sacrifice. It was at that point in which our history of collective action and national unity was effectively discredited or even erased in favor of a myth of self-reliance and near reli…
