#Bill60 will likely be passed this week, and it will grow homelessness across Ontario — something our food banks, shelters, and municipalities do not have the resources to address.

When you wonder why encampments are growing in your community, remember Bill 60.

My remarks today at the OLA:
I was proud to be thrown out of the Ontario Legislature today as the Ford government shamefully passed #Bill60.

We won't be silent while this government makes more Ontarians homeless.

What an energizing day! Thousands of people showed up for our National Housing Day Rally to say NO to #Bill60 and attacks on renters!

Even though Doug Ford is trying to take away our homes, the Ontario Legislature is OUR house — the people's house — and together, we WILL evict him from office!

More and more people want encampments evicted. Neighbourhood groups are suing shelter providers. Now, they're attempting to stop supportive housing in Parkdale. You can't have all three!

Last week, City Council voted to make changes their encampment protocol that violate human rights.

So this morning, I introduced a letter at the Housing Rights Advisory Committee (HRAC) to challenge Council's unilateral authority to revise encampment policy: secure.toronto.ca/council/agen...

The province's actions, together with it's inability to build or encourage necessary housing, is setting us up for a massive social deficit.

When affordable housing or rent becomes so difficult to find, we're pushing people onto the streets, into the hospitals, and into the morgues.

There is no "Three Strike Rule" on human rights, and I remind City Council that the provisions of the Waterloo ruling re: encampments don't extend to just any offer of shelter — it must be *truly* accessible shelter.
Councillor Fletcher's motion to prioritize encampment removals for those having a significant impact within 50 metres of a school, daycare, or playground, and to make a max of three offers of shelter, CARRIES 14-5.

Join us on National Housing Day (Sat., Nov. 22) for a rally from the offices of landlord lobbyists FRPO to Queen's Park! FRPO are working with the Ford government to make us homeless.

Being neutral on legislation like #Bill60 that makes it easier for Ontarians to become homeless is not an option.

Thank you to City Council for voting to stand up for renters against the impacts of #Bill60, including by reviewing legal options to fight the Bill.

Today's vote is an important affirmation of our rights as tenants and the clear link between evictions and homelessness.
Up now: the province is making changes to the rules for tenants and landlords via Bill 60. The City is worried about it. Council will vote on whether to oppose.

From a new report, here's a quick summary of what's on the table from Queen's Park. secure.toronto.ca/council/agen...

Homelessness will dramatically increase in Toronto over the winter, primarily because of provincial and federal funding cuts. Because of this, Toronto's Warming Centres will not be able to meet the need.

Proud to have authored a letter with @nodemovictions.bsky.social, co-signed by 134 orgs, demanding that Premier Ford repeal #Bill60 — which we call the "Create Encampments Faster" Act.

Ontario can't afford even weaker rental protections and more homelessness.

According to Premier Ford, mental health and "addiction" cause homelessness — there's no acknowledgment that their policies are the largest contributor to homelessness in Ontario.

This includes Bill 60, which must be fought by tenants and municipalities alike.

Ricardo Tranjan: Think Doug Ford has walked back his war on tenants? There’s more to come. Here’s how it should be fought.

In 2024, a draft report recommended that Peel Region's water/wastewater services transition from the region to a provincially regulated utility. With Doug Ford, the fear is that uploading water signals an intention to sell that public corporation to the private sector. Why else would they upload it?

Good — our first victory! But while Ford may be calling off consultations on eliminating security of tenure for tenants, make no mistake: his intention with Bill 60 and beyond is to weaken protections for tenants that will leave Ontarians homeless. Keep fighting! www.cp24.com/politics/que...

Our Parkdale supervised consumption site had near unanimous support at community meetings, 300+ residents who signed a petition in support, and the evidence on our side.

But Premier Ford is closing it regardless, and the results will be absolutely deadly.

Bill 60 is outrageous in a province already inundated with mass homelessness.

It further limits justice for tenants at the LTB, expedites evictions, and further incentivizes Landlord's Own Use evictions by slashing compensation to tenants.

Unconscionable!

As a professional DJ, I can say that outdoor raves are symptomatic of a lack of accessible third spaces to host a rave — either formal or informal. And on informal spaces, the red tape and expense in securing the necessary permits is ridiculously onerous. City policies created the problem.
My @thestar.com column this week: after Toronto Council requested reports on potential new rules for activities like raves, jet ski riding and pickleball, I’ve got an important reminder: it is a very good thing that people are having fun in the city.

Fun is good.

Tending to the whims of grumblers might make for good politics in election season, but it often makes for lousy governance.

This is shocking overreach: not only is the Ford government attempting to have a publicly elected official removed from office, they are also attempting to ban them from a future election — all in the name of "accountability."

This is not accountability. This is a vile assault on democracy.
