Software for Fun - skill issue
@di-caverna.bsky.social
Floating freely, software for fun, cats, my family, my town, my bike, sometime games, that's all.

Truth, freedom then peace.
Linux Mint or Ubuntu or any other Ubuntu derivative are best for out-of-the-box compatibility (because HWE kernels) and easy installation of drivers and codecs.

My recommendation is Linux Mint, very reliable.

Linux/Unix always allows deletion of an opened file if you have permissions.

The directory entry is removed immediately, the file body persists so the program can continue to use it but it is removed immediately on close.

Apparently those "SyntaxWarning: invalid escape sequence" are just warning and not blocking.

I asked ChatGPT (lol) about it and it says it is about light-locker-settings that is broken, he suggested commands to fix it, can you ask it on your side or should I post those here?

The full answer is too long to post it here.

I just did that update, it must be something strange on your side, try reinstalling python3 then update again.

Win2k was great but it has been going downhill since, win7 was a small local peak before disaster.

I confirm, gaming is great on Mint, if you have nvidia then drivers installation is just 2 clicks from the desktop.

I only use -any- of their SW products if somebody pays me to do so and pays for licenses. Microsoft cannot be trusted and is, probably, by far the worst of the various tech companies.

Went to Linux Mint for my personal business/life years ago, it is like a sanity island, very very stable.

What are you trying to do? I failed to understand it :-)

I often read this common theme: you need "coding" to use Linux.

This is not the case and has not been the case for at least 20 years.

You install the OS then you click on menu and buttons just like windoze and mac.

Yes, so boring that you can do real work on it. It continues to work day after day after day...

boring...

Most asked question after win11 happened, the answer is always: Linux Mint.

Most distros include Libre Office by default, it is highly compatible with MS documents.

You may try to install it in windows and give it a try, you'd get exactly the same experience on Linux, actually, this is the best approach, first test applications in windows then migrate to Linux.

Oh cool, I was not aware Warpinator was available for Android.

Same for me, I do play online but it is relax time, I learned to appreciate single player games too.
November 20, 2025 at 2:34 PM
"Linux" is not a thing that updates itself, it is a kernel, only a distro can fail updating.

I guess you don't use Mint, I am on a streak on 8 years of updates without problems.

Most games work, like 90% from last numbers, it is already good.

I am fine with them not wanting me spend money on their games, there are plenty others, games are definitely not that central in my life.

windoze never went out of fashion
November 20, 2025 at 1:57 PM
If you get interested the 2nd step would be to install it in a VM and try things, look at applications and so on.

Only when you will feel comfortable with the whole idea then you could consider installing it for real.
November 20, 2025 at 1:54 PM
There are distros that are very easy to use, probably you should give one a try and see for yourself.

No need to install anything, just boot it from an USB and play with it a bit, you will have a clearer idea of what using Linux -really- is:
