Just seen that Trenitalia is also included and not just in Italy but also in France! Now we just need Spain to join and the stupid Ouigo train classique trains to appear in the DB timetables and ticketing will be revolutionised quite a bit already!

Deutsche Bahn is selling SNCF Tickets from France to Italy! This is great news for #crossborderrail. And they're even affordable for once! Excited and looking forward to more simple ticketing thanks to DB, after all they have the best timetable lookup @jonworth.eu @seatsixtyone.bsky.social

When is SNCF & Eurostar finally getting replacement trains for TGV réseau/PBKA/PBA? They're uncomfortable design and outdated: yesterday the doors unlocked before arrival... And ridiculous seat for an international journey without a table @jonworth.eu @seatsixtyone.bsky.social #crossborderrail

Happening at 6pm in Paris outside Gare decl'Est! We have to save our night trains from Paris to Berlin and Vienna! @staygroundednet.bsky.social @greens-efa.eu @gruene.de

While Brussels still has the worst car drivers in the world (nobody is as entitled and aggressive towards pedestrians and cyclists and incompetent in blocking all junctions), Brussels has learnt this and is working to change things: 25 years of an annual car free Sunday, the Move and new infra!

However, the ticket office staff can check bike reservations and sell tickets that ensure you get a spot, so unless there's a long queue it's good to just do that. Important for Intercity trains as they have a much smaller bike compartment (still great when compared to UK trains) #crossborderrail

Reporting back on bikes on Polish trains! Modern (Polregio) regional trains have plenty of space for bikes with two such bike compartments per train so buying a bike ticket on the ticket vending machines on the day should generally work out fine. Great with the straps to attach the bikes too!

Yes :) Brussels is definitely moving in the right direction in terms of infrastructure: many new LTNs, Pedestrianisation, tactically placed bollards and contra-flow bike lanes. However, given that "Brusselisation" was a term for making a European city as car friendly as possible, there's a lot to do

A good example of #crossborderrail are the ÖBB nightjets, which allow for easy travel overnight, making long distance travel a lot more feasible and comfortable saving a hotel. However, we have lost so many night train connections, it will take a long time to catch up with the past...

Some more #crossborderrail issues: why can SBB Milano-Frankfurt reservations only be done with a paper reservation sent by mail? Why does the Trenitalia App hide the fact that Trenord regional trains go beyond Italy? There is stil la long way to go for normalising European #crossborderrail... 1/n

Now back on a good old ICE with working WiFi, and comfortable interior. Apparently this one is in cooperation with Lufthansa as it goes via Frankfurt Airport, but there's also the female ICE for gender equality bewegendefrauenamzug.de/db-frauennet... 6/n

Sadly, despite the beautiful scenery, this train showed something shameful: #Schengen is dead. Both the Italian and German police did "random"* checks on passenger ids, which wasted ~15 minutes in Brennero - has anyone analysed what this means for #crossborderrail travel times?

The new Railjets are fancy and a major step forward with step-free access (not in Germany due to different platform height - I wish the EU had standardised that...) and modern equipment such as contactless charging and luggage locks. However, charging was slow and the WiFi didn't work properly. 3/n

Arrived well in Bologna, which does have an interesting high speed underground station connected with the main station through some parking. Frecciarossa was fast, comfortable and good WiFi as usual but no luggage racks for large items such as pushchairs and large suitcases. 2/n

Back on track with #Crossborderrail comparing three high speed trains today, one of which covers three countries: excited to find out what OBB's Railjets are like. The menu looks great so lunch should be sorted. 1/n

Happy to read in the on-board train magazine that the aging TGVs on this line will be replaced around October 2026 - seats without a table really are not good enough for a 7 hour journey, which will also be cut shorter by 20mins. When will the old classic trains get an upgrade though?
May 29, 2025 at 9:02 PM
It's perfectly feasible to get from the UK to Italy in one day and cover 2000km by rail #staygrounded #crossborderrail Nonetheless, a lot has to change before this will become the standard option: from London to Paris and Milano capacity was at the limit in every train I took, all on time though!
May 29, 2025 at 8:32 PM
Paris is transforming in so many ways! Loved the anti-adverts on the RER, the school streets full of parents on bikes and foot and the ubiquity of cycle infrastructure and free water dispensers and the clear efforts to increase greenery #degrowth #sufficiency #publicluxury #urbanism #endadverts 6/6

Now on the train to Paris Gare de Lyon (not Gewerkschaft der Lokführer!) - hoping for a smooth journey without any delays. Sadly Schengen is dead: id checks and police at a side platform for this train, making it feel like it could be a future Eurostar platform for #crossborderrail @jonworth.eu 5/n

Next up on the way to Porta Garibaldi: a techno-utopian dream or is it greenwashing? While we need trees and wildflowers and ponds and they are quite neat and perfectly in bloom at the moment, you do have to question the reasons for company-sponsored gardens and "green skyscrapers"... 4/n

There seem to be some efforts to make cycling safer and more accessible in Milan, with adverts for 4.50€ a day rental bikes as in France and some new proper Dutch style intersection designs. While there's still a long way to go, Italy is also seeing a slow #vélorution 🚲 3/n

Arrived well in Milano Centrale. This #Crossborderrail trip required a walk across town to Milano Porta Garibaldi: cars can park directly in front of the station, while pavements are thin. Public transport is electric with both historic trams and brand new electric buses outside the station. 2/n

Back on track! This time 🇮🇹 to🇫🇷 without flying and it appears that Italy can sometimes look like Scotland! #staygrounded
May 12, 2025 at 6:23 AM
Happy to have arrived in Rome! The last leg was fast and smooth but with a fifteen minute delay. In contrast to the previous #crossborderrail connections, there was plenty of space in this Frecciarossa which also give most seats a table. Next time I'll try it all in a day and hope for no delays! 8/8
