Ethiopia imports much more from China than it used to, as do many other African countries—

China’s central role in merchandise trade is the result of a large change that has taken place in just a few decades. This change has been especially large in Africa and South America.

Noise pollution from electric passenger rail harms babies' health.

"I estimate that the annual cost of noise pollution due to harms to health at birth is $9.8 billion."

Black, Hispanic, and the poorest Americans disproportionately bear these costs.

China’s fertility rate has fallen to one, continuing a long decline that began before and continued after the one-child policy—

The 1970s were a decade shaped by fears about overpopulation. As the world’s most populous country, China was never far from the debate.

I'm excited, the RCT suggests Malengo increases psychological well‑being by about 0.36 standard deviations. As a reference point, this is similar in magnitude to the improvements after vision-restoring cataract surgery.

This is not obvious a priori!

(2) i wish non-economists would realise just how much time each economics paper takes to write (because of our norms about how thorough each paper has to be)
We just spent 6 months to add 1 figure to this paper. Some people said, "Couples aren't prioritizing men's careers. Men just have better earnings opportunities when moving."

Earnings effects of moves for couples on the left, singles on the right. Negligible gap between single men and women.

What happened when the U.S. forcibly sent 400,000 Mexican workers back to Mexico in the 1930s?

The employment rate of native workers *went down* noticeably as a direct result. (You read that correctly)

Why?

Forced repatriation destroyed low-skill markets.

In the early 1980s, almost half a million people worldwide were paralyzed by polio every year, most of them children. But since the peak in 1981, the number of cases has fallen by more than 99%.
