Initial amusement on seeing this headstone matured into curiosity about a man who gave his life. Private Alfred Deadman, 2nd Bn., Royal Sussex Regiment died on a Somme battlefield at 42 years of age, older than the typical serviceman. He was the son of John Deadman of Northfleet, Kent. #ww1 #somme

Fricourt German War Cemetery, France. Of the 11 million Germans mobilized in 1914, 100,000 were Jewish. They too fought and died for their country but received much of the so-called "stabbed in the back" blame by war's end. By 1935 all Jewish officers were purged from the ranks. #WW1 #Somme #history

WW1 shells near Mouquet Farm, France.
Driving along a farm road in the "red zone", we came upon these. Numerous unexploded shells are recovered yearly from WW1 battlefields during the "iron harvest". At the current rate, this is predicted to continue for the next several hundred years.
